CHHS sets record in Apex Relays

Three Chapel Hill High School seniors -- Kevin Timp, John Renner and Josh Fesel -- along with junior Billy Bernath, broke the meet record held by Leesville Road since 1998 in the 4 x 1600-meter relay at the Bojangle's Apex Lion's Relays.

The old record of 18:22.1 was shattered with a time of 18:07.7.

Two performances by NC athletes at Saturday's Taco Bell Classic in Columbia, SC were among the best ever by North Carolina prep athletes.

Mount Tabor's Mike Loyd placed second in the 200m in 21.12 -- 7th best all time for NC 200m/220y sprinters.

Carolina Day (Asheville) won the girls 4x800 in 9:38.49 to become the 7th fastest school in NC history. Only SE Raleigh, Dudley, Mt Tabor, Watauga, Hillside, and Millbrook have run faster.

Tuesday - April 23, 2002

Sanderson was represented well today by five athletes at the RJ Reynolds Fresh/Soph Invitational Track & Field Meet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at Hanes Park. Wells Struble took first place in the pole vault. A last minute entry in the 4 X 200, consisting of Quint Noble (first leg), Robert Barksdale (second leg), Andrew Berryann (third leg) and Justin Anderson (final leg) took first place. Justin Anderson brought home two second place ribbons in the 100 and in the long jump. Robert Barksdale did the long jump for the first time and placed fourth. Andrew Berryann took second in the triple jump. Quint Noble placed third in the pole vault and fourth in the triple jump. Complete Results

Mary Jo Handley of RJ Reynolds HS (Winston-Salem, NC) has signed to run at Furman University next year. Mary Jo is receiving a $5000 athletic scholarship. With academic and other aid, she will be receiving around $25,000 per year, about $1000 short of full expenses. Mary Jo has personal bests of 59.2 in the 400m Dash, 1:19.98 in the 500 Run, and 2:21 in the 800 Run. She ran first leg on the 2001 4A state champion 4x400 Relay, as well as first leg on the runner-up 4x800 Relay. As an individual, she was 2nd in the 2002 NC Indoor State Championships in the 500m Run. Mary Jo is an excellent student as well--she is ranked 13th in her class of 305, with a 4.667 weighted GPA.

Raleigh Relays at NCSU

Many of the top high school track and field athletes in the state are expected to participate in the Raleigh Relays on Thursday at N.C. State's Paul Derr Track.

The annual track showcase is led by the sprinters from Winston-Salem Mount Tabor and Northern Durham.

Northern Durham also has long jump and triple jump All-America A.J. Davis.

Broughton has two track All-Americas in Chris Gross in the pole vault and Jesse Williams in the high jump.

The women's field includes Greenville Rose, which is led by Kimberly Moore, one of the top jumpers in the state.

The meet begins at 4 p.m. There is no admission charge.

NORTHERN SHINES:
Northern Durham's Josh Gattis won the 100 (11.02 seconds), 200 (21.89) and 110-meter hurdles (14.99) in leading the Knights to the boys team title in The Burlington News-Times Track Classic on Saturday.

Teammate A.J. Davis won the long jump (23-1 1/4) and triple jump (46-3 1/4).

Broughton's Chris Gross, who missed the indoor track season with a knee surgery, won the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches).

Other area winners were Southern Durham's Jameswillie Bacon, 400 (50.71); Broughton's Williams, high jump (6-10); Broughton's Law Weaver, 1,600 (4:27.56) and Northern Nash's Dominique Bunn, shot put (45-11).

In girls competition, Durham Jordan's Kate Merrill won the 1,600 (5:10.62), Durham Hillside's Annene Wynne won the high jump (5-2) and Southeast Raleigh's Sarah Morris won the pole vault (10-0).

Greenville Rose's Moore had a dominating performance at the Bill Carver Track Classic in Fayetteville. She won the high jump (5-2), triple jump (36.4 1/4) and long jump (18-4).

Other winners were Lee's Nigel Blue, 100 (10.7) and 200 (22.3); Lee's Al Adams, high jump (6-4), Lee's Carlos Jenkins, shot (46-10), Green Hope's Cody Hill, 400 (51.30) and Green Hope's Hector Cotto, 110 hurdles (14.4).
