Article from The Watauga Democrat on former Watauga Cross Country and Track coach Lan O'Loughlin
(O'Laughlin started the girls cross country program at Watauga High School in 1980.)
O'Loughlin could also coach in the classroom
05/02/2003 By Steve Behr
A good friend of mine coaches football and used to coach track and field down in Union County.
When people see him, he's often wearing his school's colors, so sometimes he's called "coach" when greeted.
It's not uncommon. I call just about all of the coaches I know "coach" whether they're at the field or not. It's a term of endearment. It's a term of respect.
Lan O'Loughlin was called coach by lots of people.
For 24 years, he coached swimming at Watauga High School. He also coached cross country and track and field during his early years at the school.
He's another whom I called coach. He's another whom I respected a great deal.
Ray Karaus is not one of the Pioneers' coaches. Instead, he teaches social studies at Watauga.
Yet his career is very similar to O'Loughlin's.
They both landed at Watauga at the same time.
O'Loughlin began his career at Watauga in 1979. Karaus started in 1980. The two veteran teachers became friends and stayed that way until O'Loughlin succumbed to liver cancer last Saturday.
"We bonded from the beginning," Karaus said on Monday. "We were close inside and out of school for the last 23 years.
Karaus saw a different side of O'Loughlin that the public, especially those of us in the sports industry, don't see that often. He saw Lan O'Loughlin the teacher.
O'Loughlin taught biology at Watauga. Often he taught the classes that none of the other teachers really wanted.
For some reason, he always got at-risk kids and those kids that so often burn other teachers out, Karaus said. But Lan had a knack of dealing with them. Basically he had the energy and the devotion to getting to them whatever he could deliver to them. I think they realized that he was on their side.
O'Loughlin's record at the swimming pool is well documented. He coached one swimmer to a prep state championship and also coached a girls' relay team to another. Two of the members on that relay team were no other than Brenda and Lindsay Taylor, who both reached the national finals in NCAA track and field.
He founded the girls' cross country team in 1980, which is now one of the most dominant teams in North Carolina. He also helped build Watauga's track teams into a state power. But then you knew all that. He took a laid back approach to his coaching. Rarely, if ever, did he raise his voice in anger. A calm motivational pep talk was more his style. Karaus said that was the same style O'Loughlin used in the classroom.
"I feel like he never got the credit he deserved for the good work he did in the classroom," Karaus said.
"People tended to pigeonhole him as a swim coach, but he spent more time teaching."
That should not come as a surprise. A good coach is also a good teacher.
O'Loughlin qualified as both.

Ginna Calloway set a Watauga school record in the 1,600-meter run in the highly competitive Taco Bell Invitational Saturday.
A total of 90 teams participated in the meet. Calloway ran the race in a time of five minutes, 16 seconds.
Even though it was a school record, it was good enough for fifth place in the race on Saturday.
Calloway was also part of the Pioneers’ 3,200-meter relay team that also finished fifth with a time of 10:04. Johnna Jackson, Kristen Bowden and Anna Mae Flynn were also on that team. Jennifer Marsh was also fifth in the pole vault. She vaulted 10 feet.
Watauga finished tied for 21 with 12 points.
T.J. Kenny finished third in the 800-meter run for the boys’ team. Kenny crossed the finish line with a time of 1:57. The Pioneers’ 3,200-meter relay team consisting of Kenny, Tyler Wilkinson, J.P. Mason and Matt Smith was fifth with a time of 8:15.
“There were 90 teams there, so I think we had a really respectable showing,” Pioneers coach Randy McDonough said.
Watauga is at Avery County on Thursday and then will participate at the Vol Classic at the University of Tennessee on Friday and Saturday.

Track star Pressley of Carver is out for season
Carver's Shawn Pressley - voted the most valuable performer in field events at last season's
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Track and Field championships - has a broken leg and will miss the rest of the season.
Pressley, who has shown promise in the long and triple jumps, was injured while triple-jumping at Greensboro Smith. Coach Ricky Holt of Carver said: "You are looking at 16 (team) points going out the window there."
Pressley, a junior, finished sixth in the long jump and 10th in the triple jump at last year's NCHSAA 3-A championships and was third in the triple and fourth in the long jump at last summer's AAU National Championships.
Holt said that Pressley's right leg bothered him during football season and that he thinks a pre-existing injury could have caused the break.
