Carver boys, Mount Tabor girls win Forsyth track titles
By Mason Linker
JOURNAL REPORTER
The Mount Tabor girls marched to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County track-and-field championship for the eighth straight year, but there is a new boys champion.
Carver, behind the fleet feet of Hakeem Mohammed and an impressive performance from sophomore Demario Smith, wrestled the boys championship away from Mount Tabor, which had won seven straight.
Mohammed, a senior sprinter, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 110 hurdles and helped Carver win the 4x100 relay. Carver finished with 123 points to edge West Forsyth (119) and also received a significant boost from Smith, who won the long and triple jumps Tuesday.
Sprinter Erica Montgomery and distance runner Amy DiBianca paced Mount Tabor's girls, who won with 187 points, 53 more than runner-up Reynolds.
Mohammed, who will attend N.C. Central on a football and track scholarship, said he was excited to go head-to-head with friend and rival J-Mee Samuels of Mount Tabor. But Samuels didn't run because of a slightly pulled hamstring.
"When he got hurt, it hurt me," Mohammed said. "It's been in my head since the beginning of the season, that I was going to run against him here, because he is younger than me, and I don't ever get to run against him in AAU, so this was my only chance ... until the Olympics."
Samuels was the most noticeable absentee, and there were several head-to-head races that never developed. The area's top seniors, Matt DeBole of Mount Tabor and Bobby Mack and Clay Ragan of North Forsyth, won individual races but didn't run against each other.
In addition to the performances by Mohammed and Smith - who were the boys track and field MVPs - Carver also got a first place from Javodd Simmons in the shot put. Mohammed tied the meet record in the 200 (set by Mount Tabor's Julius Reece in 1987) with preliminary time of 21.64 seconds.
Five meet records were set yesterday. North Forsyth's boys 4x800 team ran a 7:52.78; Bobby Mack (9:12.33) and DiBianca (11:16.54) set records in the 3,200; Mount Tabor's girls broke a 16-year old record in the 4x200 with a time of 1:42.67; and sophomore Hannah Parks of Glenn pulled off one of the surprises of the day by running down DiBianca and Taylor Steelman of Mount Tabor on the final stretch to win the 1,600. Parks finished in a record 5:13.65.
Montgomery won the 100 and 200 for Mount Tabor's girls, and also ran on the winning 4x200 team. Paris Smith of Reynolds won the 100 hurdles and the 400, and Lauren Rauck of Reynolds won the 800, but the Demons couldn't catch the Spartans, who built their lead in Tuesday's field events.
Nita Dewberry of North Forsyth, who won the triple jump and was second in the long jump, was the girls field MVP. Montgomery was the track MVP.
Coach Ricky Holt of Carver said: "We were able to have the outstanding sprinters, and the relay put us over the top. We have improved in middle distance, but not to the point of Mount Tabor. We always jokingly call it the Mount Tabor Invitational anyway, but our kids wanted to show they were the best in the city, and they did."
