Mary Spear was NCISAA 1600 champion in 1981, 1982, and 1983 and also in the 3200 in 1982 while a student at Forsyth Country Day.
Mary Spear
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Mary Spear, a mother, wife, daughter, sibling,
friend and lawyer, died on Feb. 26, 2005. Her death followed a 2
1/2-year battle with cancer. She was 40 years old. She leaves behind
her two daughters, Jemma, 9, and Rovenna, 3; and her husband, C. Edson
Armi. Mary was born in Hays, Kansas, on Dec. 30, 1964. She grew up in
Winston-Salem. Her father, Guy Spear, is an educator; her mother, Laura
Johnson Spear, is a librarian. Mary is survived by her three brothers,
Christopher (Norfolk, Va.), Michael (New York, N.Y.), and Matthew
(Charlotte). In addition, she was blessed to be part of a loving community
of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Mary attended
Summit School in Winston-Salem until ninth grade, and graduated from Forsyth
Country Day School in Lewisville in 1983. From an early age, she displayed
the drive and determination that, in her final years, enabled her to deal
remarkably with her illness. In a family that contains both "jocks" and
intellectuals, Mary proved that one could be both. While growing up, the
young Mary became an accomplished runner. She ranked number one in high
school in the one-mile run for three years. She won state championships
and participated in U.S. Olympic trials. Despite great athletic
accomplishments, she made the decision at the end of high school to stop
running and focus on public service. She felt that she had other gifts to
utilize, including her outstanding verbal skills. After graduating as her
high school's valedictorian, she went to the University of North Carolina
on a prestigious Morehead Scholarship. There she majored in political
science, spent her junior year in France, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
Along the way, she spent some time doing volunteer work in West Africa.
After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Mary won a Rotary
Scholarship that enabled her to study law in Liege, Belgium, for a year.
On her return, she attended Duke University School of Law. After graduating,
she passed the North Carolina bar exam and spent a year clerking for North
Carolina Supreme Court Justice Willis P. Whichard. She married Edson in
Aug. 1991. The ceremony took place in France, near the town of Cluny in
Burgundy. Edson's appointment in 1993 to the University of California at
Santa Barbara faculty as a professor of art history, took them to Santa
Barbara, Calif. Initially, Mary had reservations about the move. Quickly,
however, she established deep personal and professional roots in this
community. A committed Francophile and fluent in French, she came to love
the town and its Mediterranean ways. The move to the west meant taking
another bar examination, and Mary was admitted to the California State Bar
later that year. Soon afterward, she was hired by the Santa Barbara County
Public Defender, realizing an ambition that she had long nursed. She spent
the next eight years there as a criminal defense attorney before illness
forced her to take a leave of absence from which she was never to return.
Not surprisingly, during her tenure she excelled and she was most pleased
when she was honored to be assigned to do writs and appeals. Mary had an
idealistic approach to the practice of law. She believed passionately in the
right of accused persons to have effective legal representation. Although
she realized that most of her clients might be guilty of "something," she
believed that many were not guilty as charged or were facing inappropriate
sentences. The same single-mindedness and competitiveness that had earlier
placed her at the forefront of athletics drove her to be an effective and
dedicated lawyer. She loved her work, became well respected by colleagues
and judges, and was fearless in standing up for what she believed to be
right. The arrival of Jemma in 1995 started her mothering years. Six years
later, Rovenna was born. A natural storyteller, Mary enjoyed spinning yarns
at bedtime for her girls while they talked about "stuff and things." Among
the fine qualities she was passing on to her girls was her innate sense of
right and wrong and her dogged optimism. Friends were an important part of
Mary's life. All found her engaging, brilliant, and funny. Among her
greatest joys was to share good food, good wine and good conversation.
During her illness, Mary displayed the strength that she always had, but also
opened up in new ways as she embraced life for all that it is worth. Along
the way, she showed others how to live. She developed her existing
friendships to levels that will never be forgotten by those who survive her.
She made new friendships. And, most important of all, she lived her family
life to the fullest. Until the last three weeks of her illness, Mary was
able to lead a remarkably "normal" life with her family and her friends.
She refused to live as though she were dying. Other than during a couple of
brief stays in the hospital, she hardly spent an entire day in bed until
her last day. Knowing that her time was most likely short, she was
determined to pack in as much as possible while not acknowledging the
certainty of any outcome. Even in the final days, her belief in the future
was not extinguished. Only two days before her death, she bought a pair of
shoes before lunching with friends. In the end, she passed away peacefully at
home with family at her side. It was a life cut very short. But it was a life
lived to the full - gracefully, elegantly - to the last possible moment. Mary
was a remarkable person. She will be deeply missed by those who loved her,
and never forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations,
to be made in the name of Mary Spear, to fund liver-cancer research at
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Joan Roseman, MSKCC Development,

Citizen-Times article:
Coach Bob Walters retiring (12/6)
A legend calls it quits
Andrew Pearson, STAFF WRITER
Dec. 6, 2004 2:14 a.m.
ASHEVILLE - An endurance coach who so capably taught athletes to use their lungs is taking a break to tend to his heart.
Carolina Day's Bob Walters has decided to retire after 25 years of coaching cross country and track and field, citing the need to spend more time with his family. Walters' oldest son, Jeremy, is an Army nurse who recently was called to serve a year in Iraq.
"I tell my athletes all the time that you have to put 100 percent effort into it," Walters said. "What kind of coach would I be if I didn't do the same? Emotionally, I just can't invest myself the way I should anymore. I love my family; I don't want to retire from teaching. This is the one major thing in my life that I have to give up. And it is a terribly, terribly hard decision to make."
Walters, 51, will remain at Carolina Day as an English teacher and coach the Wildcats track and field teams in the spring. He will then return in 2006 as strictly a personal coach for another son, Mason, a junior who throws the shot put and discus for Carolina Day.
"I know it was a hard decision for him, but this is proof that he is not only a good coach, but a great person," said Duke University junior Laura Stanley, a high school All- American under Walters in 2001 and one of the top prep distance runners in state history.
Walters came to WNC in 1991 after 12 years of coaching in West Virginia. Naturally, a knowledgeable coach transplanted into a hotbed for distance running found success.
For seven years, Walters' teams at Christ School were contenders for conference titles.
When he moved to rival Carolina Day in 1996, the tiny private school was already a power in the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association.
Walters helped the Wildcats transcend that.
Two years after Stanley graduated, two more former Asheville Citizen-Times Runners of the Year, Brenna Burns and Taylor Barr, made the 2003 girls team one of the best in WNC history.
"It was wonderful to be on such a great team," Carolina Day senior Laura Kaplan said. "I'm just lucky that I got to have (Walters) as my coach the entire time."
"Bob has been such a big part of my life and I don't think that will change," sophomore Marley Burns added. "He has been the greatest coach I could imagine."
A sense of togetherness has defined Walters' run in WNC as much as his teams' talent.
Even when Carolina Day forfeited two NCISAA cross country state titles due to Walters entering too many runners in the 2003 state meet, the families of his runners united around him.
"(Forfeiting the titles) was crushing, but the silver lining was the kids and their parents," Walters said. "You meet a lot of good people when you coach distance runners. Runners are a different type of people. They believe in discipline, independence and are usually very selfless. I don't foresee ever losing contact with all the friendships I have been lucky enough to make."
