Eagles Spirit Away Cross Country Victory

Charlotte Myers Park's Ken Dowdle

By Susan Shackelford, Staff Writer

Some East Mecklenburg High runners huddled Friday in a team meeting just moments before beginning the boys' part of the Southwestern 4A cross country meet at McAlpine Greenway Park.

As they broke up, a series of loud yells came from the huddle.

You could hear the noise 40 yards away at the meet starting line, and it proved to be the first of many big noises from the East Mecklenburg boys' team. Defending their conference title, the Eagles ran away with the championship, 37-66 over second-place Myers Park.

Ken Dowdle of Myers Park easily won the individual title (15:47). In the subsequent girls' title race - first for the conference - Lene Hestdal, also of Myers Park, took individual honors in 20:01.6. She led Myers Park to the team title, 53-65 over runner-up South Mecklenburg.

The coach for East Mecklenburg's boys even got in on the noise-making.

As Larry McAfee, clad in shirt and tie, saw his runners coming down the home stretch, he raced up and down a 10-yard stretch at the finish line, clutching his clipboard and congratulating his runners. "Five on the all-conference team (the top 10 finishers)," he screamed at them, with his other arm thrust in the air.

McAfee said afterward he hadn't expected such a strong finish - third place and then seventh through 11th - out of about 85 boys. "We talked about it jokingly," he said with a smile. "It's garbage talk."

East's strategy, McAfee said, was for the middle-of-the-pack runners to bunch together and keep competitors out. "And they did it," he said. "The key thing was to stay together."

And though the prerace huddle sounded like a rah-rah session, McAfee said it wasn't. "It's not really a psych job," he said, "We don't say we are going to run super. We say, 'Let's do the best we can.' We've just got a bunch of people who are committed to God, their teammates and the school."

"We've wanted this all year," said East's third-place finisher, Ken Foreman. "We were so scared we were going to lose to Independence."

East was unbeaten against league teams this season, but last week defeated Independence by only five points. "I've never seen us run like a team like we did today." Foreman said.

Myers Park's Dowdle, meanwhile, is a challenger for the state crown in two weeks and was pleased with his rac - particularly overcoming a recent problem of getting an early lead. "We've been doing speed work for two weeks," he said, "and that's what got by starts so fast."

In the girls' race, Hestdal easily defeated about 65 other competitors despite nagging foot ailments.
