Hardymon Runs To SW4A Title By David Scott, Observer Staff Writer Kirk Hardymon's victory Friday afternoon in the Southwestern 4A boys cross country meet at McAlpine Greenway Park looked easy enough. A 13-second gap between East Mecklenburg's Hardymon and South Mecklenburg's Mike Crowley. A strong finish. The major reason the Eagles nearly beat Myers Park in the team standings. But it wasn't easy. "I was dying," said Hardymon, whose winning time was 16:41.8 on the 5,000-meter course. "Massive cramps." This was only the second time Hardymon, a senior, had won a high school cross country meet. The first was last week. "Hey, the last two years there was alway (former Myers Park standout and two-time conference champion Ken) Dowdle," Hardymon said. "Not many people won when he was around." Hardymon got the knack last week. "I had that race by the first mile," Hardymon said. "This one wasn't that easy, but I did the same thing." The girls' winner was South's Lisa Morales, a prerace favorite, in 20.35.4. As expected, Independence took the team title. The boys' winner, Myers Park, slipped by East 53-56. "That's the way it goes," said East coach Larry McAfee. McAfee was disappointed, mainly because his No. 4 runner, Forrest Lupo, had to drop out of the race with cramps. That probably made the difference for Myers Park. About halfway through the race, Lupo was 13th, and the Eagles had a solid lead over the Mustangs. When Lupo dropped out, things changed. "It's what we've been pointing for," said Myers Park coach Richard Prince. "We've had some hard workouts, and we went to some big meets so they could get exposed to some top competition." Morales was pressed by West Mecklenburg's Shirley Truesdale, who came in at 20:40. Then came East sophomore Barbara Honeycutt (21:16). After Honeycutt came a lot of girls in gold and green - Independence's uniforms. The Patriots had runners finishing fourth (Marcia Forrest), sixth (Michelle Daigler), seventh (Tracy Clay), ninth (Kathy Lawson) and 13th (Candy Serrett). After
a week's rest from competition, all the Southwestern 4A teams will compete in
Friday's sectional meet at McAlpine. The state meet, also at McAlpine, is
