Start of Winston-Salem Sectional

Baker, Grimsley Harriers Win in Sectional Meet
Demons Advance to State Meet

By Tucker Mitchell, Staff Reporter

North Iredell's superlative Robert Baker and traditional team powers Reynolds and Grimsley made sure there were few surprises at yesterday's sectional cross country meet at Hanes Park.

Baker, the two-time state champ in the 3,200-meter run, sped past Grimsley's Allen Ford midway through yesterday's race and ran to an easy victory. His time of 16:07 smashed Ford's course record of 16:23 set earlier this year.

Ford could take some consolation in leading Grimsley to the team title and into the state meet for the second straight year. The Whirlies topped Reynolds 38-40, their fourth victory over the Demons this season. Both teams will advance to next week's state meet at Charlotte's McAlpine Greenway.

Baker will advance to the state meet too, along with the second and third-best individual runners outside of the winning teams.
