This was the third year that Girls Cross Country was recognized as an official sport by the NCHSAA.

What are known as Regional meets today were called Sectional meets back then.
There were 5 Sectional meets, with the top 2 teams and top 3 individuals from each qualifying for the State Meet.

All classifications competed together.

East Mecklenburg coach Larry McAfee looked pleased after his boys' cross country team won the high school sectional Friday at McAlpine Greenway Park.

At the time, McAfee didn't know that, in about half an hour, things would look even better for the Eagles.

That is because, after the East boys' won their title, the Eagle girls duplicated the feat. A double victory. All in one afternoon.

"I felt like we had a chance to win both of them," said McAfee, whose teams swept last week's Southwestern 4A meet. "But you know how these things go sometimes. You don't know how things will turn out in a one-shot deal. A few years ago we won the conference easily but our No. 3 runner got hurt. We barely missed making the state."

It was the first outright sectional title for McAfee, who has coached the boys team since 1974, when it tied Winston-Salem Reynolds for the boys' team title. He has coached the girls' team since girls' cross country became a team sport in 1980.

The Eagles qualified for next Friday's state meet, also on McAlpine's 5,000-meter course, with 56 points. Joining the boys team will be Myers Park, which had 93 points. North Mecklenburg finished third with 169 points and Independence was fifth with 201. The top two teams qualify for the state.

The Eagle girls with 59 points, beating runner-up Gastonia Ashbrook's 72. South Mecklenburg missed a trip to the state meet, finishing third with 95 points. Myers Park had 101 and defending champion Independence 109.

Individual winners were Sun Valley's Pat Ambrose, who won in a time of 16:23.5, and Richmond County's Kathy Ormsby (18:12.3). The top Mecklenburg County girls' finisher was West Mecklenburg's Jennifer Decann, who finished third at 19:49.0. Decann, a ninth- grader at Coulwood, qualifies for the state meet as an individual.

East's top boys' finisher was Eric Landis, who was third at 16:35.4. The Eagles' Kyle Fidler (16:45) was fifth, Chris Hertel (17:04) 11th, Britt Startsman (17:35) 16th and John Biggers (17:50) 24th.

The Eagle girls finished equally high and close. Connie Fraley [Corrected to be Claudia Schiffers] was fifth at 20:09, Denise Holiday (21:22) 12th, Lisa Kowalske (21:29) 14th, Kelly Hughes (21:30) 15th, Say Taylor (21:49) 18th and Barbara Honeycutt (21:53) 19th.

Sun Valley's Ambrose, whose 5,000-meter personal best is 15:48, wasn't happy with his time. And the ease with which he won wasn't much consolation. He wanted to break 16 minutes.

"When I don't get what I want, I'm displeased," said Ambrose. "I was terrible. But nobody was on my rear end. If somebody is running in front of me and challenging me, I'm better."

Still, Ambrose's victory wasn't an accident. He was among the favorites, and he was able to win with, for him, a subpar effort. But he said he didn't go into the race over-confident.
