Kinney Meet's Top Runners Shatter Cross Country Marks Source: The Charlotte Observer, Sunday - Nov. 28, 1982 By Kate Boylan, Staff Writer Charlotte has never seen such a high school cross country meet. "It's a rarity," as assistant meet coordinator Richard Prince said of Saturday's Kinney Cross Country southern regional at McAlpine Greenway Park. Course records were left in little vinyl pieces. Even though the early paces were hindered by wet grass, many of the best runners from 11 states made sure Prince's play-by-play, another rarity, was kept lively. Defending regional champion Andrea Volpe of Lake Braddock High in Burke, Va., won the girls' 5-kilometer race in 17:21.2. The course record was 18:12, set three weeks ago by Kathy Ormsby of Richmond County High in the N.C. state championship meet. Volpe also broke her own meet record of 17:45. Ten girls broke the record. Ormsby beat it, too, finishing the course in 17:55.1, good enough for sixth. Virginian Alisa Harvey was second, and Floridian Karol Dorsett was third. Brian Jaeger, of Winter Park, Fla., finished 13 seconds ahead of his closest competition to win the boys' race and to break the record. The old course record of 15:23 was set in the 1981 state meet by Robert Baker, now an N.C. State runner. Jaeger's time was 14:57.6. Nine boys broke the record. Another Floridian, Billy Convey, was second. Gavin Gaynor of Kentucky finished third. The top Carolinas boys runner was Ken Costello of Irmo, S.C. Costello finished 13th in 15:35.7. Last year, in the same meet in Atlanta, Costello was third. The top eight runners in the boys' and girls' divisions advance to the national championships Dec. 11 in Orlando, Fla. There they will meet qualifiers from regionals held Friday and Saturday in Hinsdale, Ill., New York City and Fresno, Calif. "I kind of knew it would be like this," Volpe said. She had to fight for her 17:45 in last year's southern regional, held in Atlanta. But, she said, "I wasn't expecting the girl from North Carolina." The girl, Ormsby, stayed with Volpe for almost half the course. Volpe broke away on the hill and stayed ahead of the approaching seven-runner pack. Volpe could have handled a few more hills, too. "It was a lot flatter," she said of McAlpine. "Harder, because I'm used to running in hills in Virginia." Ormsby, who always takes off fast -- and maintains the lead -- knew the competition would challenge her stamina. "It's kind of hard to take," she said of Volpe after the race. "She doesn't slack at all. Anybody who runs 17:20 deserves it." Ormsby almost decided not to compete because of a sore Achilles tendon. She said she might not attend the national meet because she has qualified with the Greensboro Pacesetters for The Athletic Congress's meet in Cincinnati the same weekend. Volpe will be at the meet. She thought the southern regional was "prestigious" because of winning a trip to Florida. Seven runners clung to Jaeger for much of the race. Jaeger pulled way ahead the second time around the lake. Unlike Volpe, Jaeger did not appreciate the hills and conserverd. But he made sure he stayed with the pack because he let the front pack get away at nationals last year and found it impossible to catch up. Jaeger liked the climate difference between North Carolina and Florida. "The pain in cool weather isn't quite as intense," he said. Setting records was not on the runners' minds, just qualifying. But Jaeger stopped in Charlotte last week on his way to watch the college nationals and checked out the course. He went to a Charlotte athletic store Friday, and the salesperson told him the record was 14:43. |
