The top 10 finishers made All-Conference. This was the third year that Girls Cross Country was recognized as an official sport by the NCHSAA. A Day For Precedents By Kate Boylan, Observer Staff Writer
The Southwestern 4A cross country meet Friday afternoon at McAlpine Greenway Park was occasion for at least two firsts. For the first time in conference history, the boys' championship team and the girls' championship team were from the same school. East Mecklenburg won each title, but without a first- place individual. East's top scorers were Eric Landis and Claudia Schiffers, second and third in their races. East placed four boys (Landis, Kyle Fidler, Chris Hertel and Britt Startsman) and four girls (Schiffers, Lisa Kowalske, Denise Holliday and Kelly Hughes) on the 10-runner all-conference teams. Landis and Schiffers were the prerace favorites. But runners from the west defeated the easterners. West Charlotte's Bob Crawford, a senior, caught up to Landis and sprinted in just ahead of him on the 5,000-meter course. Crawford's twin brother, Tom, finished 11th. And in another first, Jenny DeCann, running for West Mecklenburg, led most of the girls' race and finished with no close challengers. DeCann is a Coulwood Junior High freshman. "I don't recall ever having (a conference champion) in cross country in 27 years," said her coach, Ron Patterson. For DeCann, this is her first year as a cross country runner. In fact, the only running she did before last spring was to keep in shape for swimming. Practice in each sport helps her breathing, and DeCann said, "You use mostly the same muscles." DeCann proved what she said after the meet. "Running is easier for me," she said. Swimming is tougher, she said, "Because I get nervouser." She certainly kept her cool against the field. DeCann, a specialist in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 1,000-meter freestyle, used the competitive drive in Friday's race. She knew Schiffers would be there. "She clobbered me in the Coaches' Invitational," DeCann said. So Friday she used this strategy: "I just found a chance, and I started slowing down (to set the pace)," she said. "And then I took a corner real quick." After that real quick corner, she stayed in the lead. Crawford's race was not quite so easy, but his first place helped the Lions to their highest finish ever in the conference meet. Crawford's strategy was not to be the leader, but the keeper-upper. "I was just trying to stay as close as I could. By the end of the race, I was just fatigued." But Crawford finished at the right time, in the race that had gone back and forth between Landis and him. "It seemed like he was right there next to me till the finish line," Crawford said. Crawford, DeCann and all the teams will compete in the sectional meet next Friday at McAlpine Greenway.
