What are known as Regional meets today were called Sectional meets back then. The top two teams in each Sectional qualified for the State Meet, and also the top 3 (three) individuals not on qualifying teams.
East Sweeps Cross Country Titles Larry McAfee would have settled for less, but he was delighted with what he got. The East Mecklenburg cross country coach told his boys and girls teams that their main goal should be for at least one of them to qualify for the state meet. The Eagles responged by winning both the boys and girls Charlotte sectional championships Friday at McAlpine Greenway Park, sparked by the individual performances of Eric Landis and Claudia Schiffers. "The main thing we wanted to do was qualify for the state meet," McAfee said. "Winning both races is like icing on the cake." The team titles mean both East teams will compete in the state meet Friday at McAlpine. Richmond County, the second-place boys team, also advanced to the state meet along with South Mecklenburg, the second-place girls team, and the top three finishers who weren't members of qualifying teams. "I told them I felt like we could win both," McAfee said. "But the most important thing was that we wanted a team in the state championships. The thing we emphasized all week was that we wanted to qualify a team." Landis, who won the Southwestern 4A Conference meet last week, won the sectional meet in 15:57, his first time under 16 minutes at McAlpine. Throughout the race, Landis maintained a substantial lead over Reggie Littlejohn of Kannapolis Brown because he wanted to avoid a sprint against Littlejohn at the finish. "I didn't want to try to kick it against him at the finish," Landis said of Littlejohn, who finished in 16:17. "I tried to pick up the pace early and used some early surges to get some distance on him. But I felt pressured by him the whole race, and I wasn't comfortable until I saw the finish line." Joining Landis and Littlejohn in the top five were Jay Youngblood of North Mecklenburg (16:19), James Coleman of Independence (16:29) and Thayne Harmon of Garinger (16:48). Littlejohn, Youngblood and Coleman will join the East team at the state meet. Other top finishers for East included Brian Payne (seventh, 16:50), Chris Hertel (10th, 17:01), Trey Ishee (39th, 17:59) and John Biggers (43rd, 18:08). Lebo Wall and Rondald Wall finished 13th and 16th, respectively, to lift runnerup Richmond County into the boys state meet. The defending state champ East Mecklenburg girls got a boost from the performance of Schiffers, who finished sixth in 20:14. McAfee was relieved to see Schiffers perform so well after she finished 16th in the Southwestern 4A meet while suffering from a virus. "Schiffers was healthy and the other girls did a super job," McAfee said. Charlotte Carlson won the girls event in 19:01 followed by Vickie Livingston of Richmond County (19:04) and Mary Moe of Garinger (20:03), each of who advanced to the state meet. Other top five girls finishers were Angel Garmon of Central Cabarrus (20:12) and Schiffers. In addition to Schiffers, East Mecklenburg had
four other runners in the top 21 to help clinch the sectional title. Kelley Hughes
(21:25) finished 16th, Lisa Kowalske (21:26) finished 17th, Say Taylor (21:40)
finished 20th and Jamie Oxendine (21:43) finished 21st. |
