Salmon Tops Boys' Cross-Country

South Mecklenburg's Bill Salmon took a little motherly advice all the way to the boys' championship of the Charlotte cross-country prep sectional Friday.

Salmon, a sophomore, ran the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes 57 seconds, beating Independence's James Coleman by a second at Charlotte's McAlpine Greenway Park.

In the girls' race, West Charlotte's Melanie Collins - the Southwestern 4A champion - won in 19:34. Mary McDonough of Myers Park, second to Collins in the Southwestern meet, was again second, in 19:38.

Independence won the boys' title with 86 points, followed by East Mecklenburg (125) and Sun Valley (156).

Statesville won the girls' portion with 65 points. East Mecklenburg was next with 109 and South Mecklenburg was third with 116. Sarah Harris was Statesville's top finisher (fifth in 20:15).

In last Friday's Southwestern 4A meet, Coleman drafted behind Salmon most of the way, winning down the stretch. This time, Salmon turned the tables on Coleman with almost the same strategy.

"My mom told me to do that (draft behind Coleman)," Salmon said. "I worked hard this week. I just decided I was going to have to fight, no matter how much it hurt I was going to have to stay with him."

Collins cut a second off last week's winning time. She made her move earlier in this race, she said.

"I got to the front much earlier," Collins said. "I just felt pretty good today."
