Source: The Charlotte Observer - Saturday October 27, 1984 Coleman, Patriots Win In Cross-Country By Chris Hobbs, Staff Writer Independence High's James Coleman had a strategy much like that of a NASCAR driver Friday in the Southwestern 4A cross country meet. Coleman, a senior, decided to set up in the draft of South Mecklenburg sophomore Bill Salmon and try to overtake Salmon down the stretch at McAlpine Park. It worked. Coleman, who had lost two of the three times he faced Salmon this season, ran the 5,000-meter course in 16.02 seconds. [Typo?] Salmon ran a 16.10. West Charlotte's only runner in the girls' race won the title. Melanie Collins, an exchange student from Australia, had a time of 19.34 seconds. Mary McDonough of Myers Park was second in 19.42 seconds. Independence won the boys' title with 30 points, East Mecklenburg was second (65) and North Mecklenburg third (82). North Mecklenburg, with 59 points, edged East Mecklenburg (69) and Independence (80) for the girls' crown. "Coach (Independence's George Phillips) told me to stay on Salmon, draft his back, and I could take him," Coleman said. Salmon led until about the last half-mile, Coleman said. "He didn't know I was drafting behind," said Coleman. "He didn't look back to see who was behind him." But Salmon, who moved to Charlotte from Philadelphia just before school started, said he knew who it was. "I thought he'd stay with me," Salmon said. "But I thought I could stretch it (the lead) out after 2 to 3 miles." Collins, who ran her best time of the season, said she wanted to get off to a strong start. "I wanted to keep the lead from the (last) turn and then try to go stronger," said Collins. "I could hear people cheering, so I just went." The Southwestern 4A teams run again Friday at McAlpine Park in the Western cross country sectionals. |
Why are they wearing Wendy's Invitational numbers? Because the
numbers were "recycled", and used again for their conference meet.
