Notes: No wind information was available.
The track at Wilson Fike HS may have still been the old 440-yards, instead of
400-meters. The results indicate that the relays were the "440-Yard Relay",
"880-Yard Relay", and "Mile Relay".
All other running events were apparently at metric distances.
Results were obtained from old newspaper clippings (containing top-4 only).
The NCHSAA did not add the 4x800 Relay as a standard event until 1988.
1984 was the final year that the Girls 200m Hurdles was a standard event.
It was replaced with the 300m Hurdles in 1985.
The Girls Pole Vault was added in 1999.

Durham Hillside rallies to win East track titleBy Dane Huffman, Staff WriterWILSON -- Just when Durham Hillside needed a third place to finish first, junior runner Rod Harris came through. With only the 1,600-meter relay remaining Friday night, the Hornets trailed Raleigh Broughton by four points in the team standings in the NCHSAA Eastern Regionals boys' track meet. But Broughton, the defending regional champion, didn't have a team in the final event. So Hillside needed a fourth-place finish to tie the Caps and a third-place finish to win. Simple enough, except that after the first two handoffs, Hillside was seventh in the eight-team field. Then Harris got the baton, and by the time he handed it to anchor Brad Sullivan, the Hornets were in third place. Sullivan, a senior who has signed a football scholarship with North Carolina, finished second to give Hillside the team championship with 50 points. Broughton was runner-up with 46 points, and Oxford Webb was third with 36. For the first year, the boys' and girls' regionals were held on the same day at Fike High School. Jacksonville and Northern Durham tied for the girls' title. Northern correctly guessed heads on a coin flip and won the right to keep the team trophy. Hillside coach Russ Blunt, while pointing to a strong effort from his entire team, was quick to point to Harris' performance as the key to victory. "He brought us back into it," Blunt said, "and then Sullivan did the rest of it." "Rod Harris did a heck of a job," said Sullivan. When asked if the team title, in a mostly individual sport, was important, Sullivan said, "Most definitely. We've been winning a lot this year, but there's more incentive in meets like this. Here, you're running from the heart." Webb won the 1,600 with a time of 3:22.87, with Hillside second at 3:23.07. Hillside finished first, ahead of Broughton, in the sectionals last week. And both teams again relied on strong individual performances to pad their point totals Friday. For the Hornets, Chris Borden finished first in the discus, with a heave of 163 feet, 1 inch, and was second in the shot at 55-2 1/2. Sullivan took fourth in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200. Broughton, as usual, relied on the standout performance of senior Danny Peebles. He won the long jump with a 23-6 1/2, was second in the 100 with a 10.54 and first in the 200 at 21.39. Peebles also anchored the Broughton 400-relay team that won the event with a time of 41.75. Lee Vernon McNeil of St. Paul's, whom Peebles has never beaten in the 100, won that event with a 10.45. McNeil, a 5-5 speedster bound for East Carolina, was fourth in the 200 at 21.74. The top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet Friday at N.C. State.
