Parkland's Goins Seeks Two State Track TitlesDuring the eight years he has been running track, Parkland hurdler Charles Goins has gotten progressively better. Though there have been some occasional ups and downs, Goins has been a steady performer. One thing Goins has learned about track is that everything is relative. Sometimes you can win a race and run a bad time and at others you can lose but still improve your time. Last week's meet, when Goins finished fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles, was one of those times when he lost but improved. His time of 14.8 seconds was his best. "I didn't feel bad about the way I ran," Goins said yesterday. "I've been running track for a while (since he was 10 years old) and I know that you're not going to win all the time." Despite his worst finishes of the season last week. Goins is optimistic about his chances in tonight's regional meet in Charlotte. Before last week's sectional, Goins had lost only once this season in either the 110-high or 300-intermediate hurdles. But with the level of competition increasing, Goins finished second in the 300 and fourth in the 110. Goins, who earlier set a record in winning the 300 intermediates at the Forsyth County Meet, said he would like to do well in tonight's meet, but his goal is just to make the state meet next week. "Reaching the states would be an accomplishment for me," said Goins, who recently signed a grant to run track at Appalachian State. "Especially since I didn't make it last year as a junior." Regardless of how he finishes tonight, Goins said he's proud of his accomplishments this season. "I feel that I've had a great year." said Goins, who also set a school record in the 300-intermediate hurdles of 38.8 and won both the 110 highs and 300s at the conference meet. "I feel good knowing that I had something outstanding to leave behind. It was important for me to leave a mark and I did." Still, a strong showing tonight would be very satisfying for Goins. "The competition should be a little stronger," Goins said. "I'll have people pushing me ... the competition should make my time that much better. Coming out first in both events - that would really be something." Parkland will have a relay team and one other individual performer participating tonight. Zallnor Banks, who last week won the 100- meter dash in the sectional meet, will be one of the favorites in that race and will also anchor Parkland's 400-meter relay team, which finished fourth in the sectional. Other top qualifiers from Forsyth County are triple-jumper Thomas Speaks of West Forsyth, Sean Malloy of East Forsyth, who won the 200 meters in the sectional, Hunter Lambeth of Reynolds in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Carver's Richard Daniels in the 100-meter dash. Also qualifying from Forsyth County were West Forsyth's 400-meter relay team (Gerald Martin, Perry Johnson, Russell Tanner and Harvey Sutton), which finished third in last week's meet, Carver's Mike Joyner in the 1,600. North's Thomas Chisholm in the 300-intermediate hurdles, North's Lee Tuttle in the 3,200 and East's 800-meter relay team (Malloy, Dwayne Richardson, Kerry Samuels and Charles Salley). East Forsyth, which finished second in last week's girls' sectional, will have six members of its team participating in the girls regional, which will also be held at Myers Park. Debra Alexander, who won the triple jump last week will be competing in four events. Alexander qualified in the 200-meter dash, in addition to anchoring East's 400- and 800-meter relay teams. Denise Dunovant of East qualified in the 100-meter dash and will team with Alexander, Ronda Lytle and Valencia Lewis in the 800-meter relay. East's 400-relay team consists of Dunovant, Alexander, Lytle and Sharon Harris. North Forsyth's Sherrie Gordon, who won both the discus and shot put in the sectional last week heads the list of other qualifiers from Forsyth County for the girls' regional. Tomika Whitten of West Forsyth, who won the 3,200 and finished second in the 1,600-meter run last week, is another top Forsyth County entry. Other qualifiers: Lynn Foster (Parkland), discus; Tracy Hennie (East Forsyth), long jump; Parkland's 800-meter relay team (Melissa Harris, Lynette Addison, Lynette Gilliam and Dietra Porter); Ashley Woodruff (West Forsyth), 800-meter run; and Yolanda Shepard (Carver), 200-meter dash.
