Reynolds runner Mike Rustad won the individual title in leading the Demons to the overall title in the boys' cross country regional at West Forsyth yesterday, while West's Tomika Whitten took the girls' individual honors.

Greensboro Grimsley won the girls' team competition with a total of 46 points. West Forsyth was second with 67 points and Eden Morehead was third with 87.

Reynolds won the boys' team competition with 42 points. Grimsley came in second at 81 and Morehead finished third with 111 points.

Greensboro Grimsley and Morehead placed runners in both divisions in the top three of the team competitions.

Rustad, a senior, won the individual competition, running the 5,000-meter course in 16:44. Teammate Glen Mays was second at 16:48, and Lee Tuttle of North Forsyth finished third in 16:59.

Whitten, also a senior, won the girls' individual competition with her time of 19:49. Stacey Watkins of Grimsley was second at 20:14, and Missy Hall of Morehead was third at 21:14.

The top three teams in the boys' and girls' divisions will go on to the state finals, as will the top five finishers in each division who are not affilliated with one of those teams. The finals will be held at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte on Nov. 16.
