Raleigh, NC - Sunday, May 19, 1985 Worley, Smith lead regional track meet By Dane Huffman, Staff Writer WILSON - Tim Worley and Anthony Smith, a pair of athletes more widely known for their football skills, each won two events Friday at the N.C. High School Athletic Association Eastern Regional track meet at Fike High School. Durham Hillside won the boys' team title and Chapel Hill took the girls' crown. Hillside totaled 57 points to claim its second straight regional title. Hoke County was second with 38 points and Fayetteville Pine Forest third with 31. The girls' team standings were closer. Chapel Hill had 37 points with Lumberton and Manteo tied for second at 30. Worley, a 6-foot-2, 212-pound running back from Lumberton who signed with Georgia, won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Smith, a 6-4, 245-pounder from Elizabeth City Northeastern who is going to Alabama, won the shot put and discus. In the 100, Worley blasted out of the starting blocks and looked to have an easy win. But Tarrell Carpenter of Hoke County closed rapidly in the final meters as both leaned toward the wire. Worley finished in 10.44 seconds, with Carpenter at 10.45. "When I got out of the blocks, I didn't see anybody, so I said, 'Hey let me go,'" said Worley. "Then he came out of nowhere." "My block slipped," said Carpenter. "I didn't think I'd win. I didn't think I'd finish second the way I came out of the blocks." Coming into the regional, Worley had won two of four races against Carpenter this year. "This feels good," said Worley. "We finally broke the tie." Worley later won the 200 with a time of 21.36. Steve Goldsby of Goldsboro was second in 21.41. Charpenter, who did not run the 200, claimed the long jump with an effort of 24 feet, 5 inches. He was only 1 1/2 inches from the regional record, but skipped his last two attempts because his coach wanted to save him for the running events. Smith won the shot with a 53-2 1/2 and the discus in 155-4, but said he wasn't pleased. "I'll be happy next week (at the state meet) when I come home with two first places," Smith said. Smith, who is in his first year on the track team, said of his performance this year, "I'm pretty inconsistent. The word experience, that's a word that plays a big part." Goldsboro's Goldsby, who had a strained hamstring, won the 400-meter dash at 48.23 and was third in the 100. "The 400 is a longer race and my legs have more time to stretch and loosen up," Goldsby said. "The 100 is so much shorter." Sophomore Linda Bryant of Manteo dominated the girls' meet, winning the long jump and 100- and 200-meter dashes. Her jump of 19-4 1/2 inches set a regional record, eclipsing Delphine Mabry's mark of 19-2 set for Southwest Edgecombe in 1982. Bryant clocked 12.15 in the 100 and 24.98 in the 200. Bryant said she was shooting for 20 feet in the state meet in the long jump. "I am going to try and leave my records all over the place," she said. "I want to make sure they know me." |
