East Mecklenburg Wins Cross-Country TitlesSource: The Charlotte ObserverSaturday, October 31, 1987
By Joe Habina, Special Correspondent Running conditions were nearly perfect at McAlpine Greenway Park Friday for the Southwestern 4A cross-country championships. Leslie McCaskill began the day's competition by winning the girls race, which set the pace for teammates as East Mecklenburg's boys and girls won team titles. The Eagles continued their dominance in the conference, winning the championships for the third consecutive year. McCaskill led five East Mecklenburg runners who finished in the top ten. Her time of 20 minutes 25 seconds was nine seconds better than her closest competitor, Kathy Stogner of Independence (20:34). Stogner ran her best race, beating her previous personal record by more than one minute. McCaskill was hampered by stomach cramps at the beginning of the race. She was able to overcome them and pulled away from the pack with teammate Kim Eldridge and Stogner at the 1-mile mark. Stogner trailed the two East runners at the 2-mile mark but quickly overcame Eldridge, making it a two-person race. "She's (McCaskill) a good runner." East Mecklenburg coach Larry McAfee said. "She has a lot of talent, a lot more than she realizes." East breezed to the team title with a score of 26 points. The closest competitor was Independence with 61. Myers Park took third place honors, eight points behind. Herb Ruth of Myers Park sprinted past East's Jon Stampa in the last 350 yards to win the boys race. Ruth found himself in third place at the two-mile mark, trailing first-place Stempa by more than 30 yards. East's Wes Ishee was running second at that point, 10 yards behind Stempa. Ishee finished third with a time of 16:26. "I ran a smart race," Ruth said. "I just stayed with him (Stempa) and gave it everything I had left. I'm amazed at myself. I wasn't concerned about winning, I was more concerned about the team winning." Myers Park finished with 58 points, second to East (43), which had three runners finish in the top ten. The top ten finishers from each race make the all-conference team. "The last couple of years we have been down," Myers Park coach Richard Prince said. "We thought we had a good chance to win but East Mecklenburg ran a good race and did a good job. "Coach McAfee is extremely interested in cross country," he said. "He works very well with the kids and they believe in him." |
