Sun Valley, Lassiter Take Cross-Country Victories

Sun Valley and Lassiter (Ga.) won two team championships in the 11th Annual Wendy's Invitational cross-country meet Saturday at McAlpine Greenway Park.

Lassiter, from Marietta, Georgia, took the boy's and girl's championship divisions while Sun Valley captured the girl's High School title and boy's 3A championship.

Three Lassiter runners finished in the top 12 in the men's victory. Its top finisher, Neal Williams (15:46) took third place as Gibbs Knotts captured first place (15:32).

Knotts, from Shiloh High in Lithonia, Ga., pulled away from the pack at the 1 1/2 mile mark on his way to the meet's best time.

"The wind was tough," Knotts said. "I felt kind of tired from the trip here. My endurance won it for me because I don't have the greatest speed in the world."

"He ran a good race," Shiloh coach Willie McKenzie said. "This is a course that is suited for him, it's predominately flat."

Lassiter's Daniell Adams finished second (18:39) to Marny Westphal, leading her team to its women's victory.

Westminster fell one point short of Sun Valley to finish second in team competition.
