Dudley Wins Prep Track Regional

By Harry Lloyd, Staff Writer

Greensboro Dudley's 1,600-meter relay team did exactly what it had to do, and edged Garinger for third place in the last event Friday night to wrap up the boys title in the Western 4A track regional.

Myers Park won the race, the last of the night on the Mustangs' track, but fell two points shy of Dudley for the team title.

Dudley had somewhat more breathing room for the girls title, beating Greensboro Grimsley 96-80. East Mecklenburg was third.

Gastonia Ashbrook's Eric Hichman broke the regional record for 3,200 meters with a time of nine minutes 15.47 seconds, knocking more than 12 seconds off the record set last year by Mike Clinebell of Watauga.

Hichman fell just short of a record in the 1,600, winning in 4:15.59. He was 50 yards ahead of Vince Howard of Page.

The girls 3,200 produced a record also, by Stacey Watkins of Grimsley in 11:21.41.

The Dudley girls 1,600-meter relay team ran 3:52.66, breaking the record of 3:55.92 set last year by the same school. Two runners, Nikki Poteat and Sonja Thomas, were on both teams.

The top point-scorer of the night was sprinter Randy Jones of Winston-Salem Glenn, who won the 200 meters (in 21.83) and the 100 (10.88), and ran the anchor leg on the winning 400-meter relay team.

Another double winner was Danez Lyons of Grimsley in the girls 100 and 200.

Myers Park's boys won two relays, the 800 and 1,600. Randy Faust and anchor Marcus Staton ran on both teams.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg's fastest sprinter, Anthony Walker of Harding, missed the meet with a pulled muscle sustained in last week's sectional.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state meet, to be held Friday in Chapel Hill and Saturday in Raleigh.
