Garinger Captures Track Meet

By Herb White, Special Correspondent

Garinger's Vernon Grier proved Thursday he could do more than throw a discus and shot put at the Southwestern 4A track and field championships at Independence High.

As expected, Grier won the discus and shot, but he also finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Grier said he entered the extra events to help the Wildcats win the boys team title. The Wildcats did just that with 198 points, topping Myers Park's 104. Grier accounted for 34 points alone.

"I knew what I could do myself," he said. "I told my coach to put me over there and I'll produce."

Grier prepared to defend his state discus title by winning with a throw of 157 feet 2 inches, outdistancing his nearest challenger, teammate Fleming Brewer, who had a best of 132-2.

Grier said he saw the competition as a warmup to a date with Harlis Meaders of Sun Valley. Meaders set a state record in the discus last month with a throw of 197-10. Grier said he isn't obsessed with a rematch, but he would like to have another chance at Meaders.

"I really didn't expect much competition," he said. "It was more like practice. Harlis knows what's happening. He knows I'm coming."

The shot put taxed Grier, as he had to hold off Ashbrook's Junior Hall to win. Grier's best toss sailed 50-7 3/4, topping Hall by a quarter-inch.

"I didn't expect to have to throw 50 feet to win but Junior Hall really pushed it out there," he said.

East Meckenburg won the girls title with 144 points, primarily on the strength of the distance events. Ashbrook finished second with 107 points.

The Green Wave's Lynett Gardin had one of the best performances in the meet, winning three events. She took the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.1 seconds, the triple jump with 33-5 1/4 and anchored the 400 relay team.

Gardin expected a close 100 but a quick start gave her a big advantage.

"I thought it would be closer than that," she said. "I didn't think I'd be out there alone like I did."

Gardin, who is headed to Appalachian State next year, said she is healthier than in recent weeks when a pulled muscle slowed her.

The triple jump went as expected, with Gardin, who has qualified for three events in next week's sectional meet at Myers Park, outdistancing the field.

Lynett wasn't the only Gardin to win, as sister Marcella won the long jump with a leap of 17-1. She also ran the third leg of the 400 relay team, handing off to Lynett on the anchor leg.
