Queen City Meet Abuzz Over Record In Discus Event

By Herb White, Special Correspondent
The Charlotte Observer

Sun Valley High discus thrower Harlis Meaders felt he was going to have a good day at the Queen City Relays at Myers Park.

And have a good day he did, smashing the meet and state marks in the boys discus.

About 30 schools from the Carolinas participated. Only one meet record was broken, but Meaders' mark had coaches and spectators buzzing throughout the day.

Meaders stunned the crowd and the competition with a toss of 197 feet 10 inches, shattering the meet record of 166 set by Tommy Eckerd of Hickory in 1984.

Meaders' mark topped the state best of 172-4 and is the best by an American schoolboy so far this year, surpassing 196-8.
Meaders, a senior who is considering several college track offers, topped the state mark with each official throw, with tosses of 187-8 and 193-6 before his third effort.

"I knew I hadn't done my best," he said.

Meaders' third heave proved to be his best, sailing down the right side of the discus area before landing nearly 198 feet from the circle.

Meaders, whose only loss this year came in the Newport News Relays in Virginia, said he felt the 200-foot mark was within reach. His fourth toss seemed to top that barrier, but was ruled foul. Tired from that throw, Meaders finished with efforts of 189-9 and 196-4.

"Two hundred is my goal. I pray I can get 200," he said. "I thought I could today, but I got tired."

Meaders' main competition was expected to be Garinger's Vernon Grier, last year's state champion. The two met last season and have been friendly rivals since.

"We knew each other from the outdoor season last year," Meaders said. "He wanted me, and I wanted him."

Although Grier was in the field, Meaders said he didn't do anything special. Figuring the competition would be fierce, Meaders felt he would have to keep up with Grier to win.

"I knew Vernon was going to be here, and I haven't been beaten inside the state this year. But I knew that if anybody could beat me, it was him," he said.

But while Meaders was piling up big numbers, Grier struggled. He fouled on his first two attempts, digging himself into a hole that he couldn't get out of. Grier managed a toss of 162-11, good for fourth place.

"After he scratched his first two, he did the smart thing and threw to get into the final," Meaders said. "He told me he was coming for me."

Meaders was pleased with his performance but expects to get better.

"I've been improving all year," he said. "I haven't reached my peak yet." Alice Vinson, Meaders' Sun Valley teammate, took the Ralph Sandiford award for outstanding female athlete by winning the girls' 100 meters with a time of 12.4 and the triple jump with a leap of 36-3.

Vinson surprised herself in the 100 meters, nipping Lynette Gardin of Ashbrook at the tape. Vinson's winning time was a personal best.

Recovering from a slow start, Vinson moved to the lead with Gardin. The two were even most of the way, but Vinson's lean at the tape was the difference.

"I think my lean helped me a lot at the end," she said. "We were neck and neck all the way. I had a slow start coming out." Vinson had an easier time of it in the triple jump, soaring seven inches farther than her nearest competitor, Tafoya Taylor of Albemarle.

Josh Mills of Dobyns-Bennett won two field events, taking the girls shot-put with a toss of 43-1 and the discus with 119-7.
