Herrman, Helms Outrun The Rest

Several past winners successfully defended their titles at the Wendy's Cross- Country Invitational Saturday at McAlpine Greenway Park.

The event had 50 teams from five states with four of last year's winners returning to win their events and a first-year participant winning one of the other two races.

Amy Herrman, a ninth-grader at Randolph Junior High, won the girls championship event running for Providence High, which she will attend next year. Herrman finished one second ahead of Kristy Dunkleberg of R.J. Reynolds, in the first of six races in the meet, with a time of 21 minutes two seconds.

Herrman got to the event just 10 minutes before the start of the race because of a mix-up in the starting time but led throughout the 3.1 mile course. "Being late really kind of helped," Herrman said. "I didn't have time to be nervous."

Hollie Michael of South Mecklenburg finished third with a 21:46.

Jared Helms of Garinger, a junior, was the winner in the boys championship event with a time of 16:41. Helms has won three meets already this season for the Wildcats.

Paul Morrison of Marion (SC) finished second with a 17:01 and Sean Connolly of West Charlotte finished third at 17:14.

"I think I probably could win at the state championships this year," said Helms. "The people who finished in front of me last year were all seniors."

Senior Marny Westphal, of Brookwood High in Atlanta, won the girls invitational event for the third straight year with a time of 18:48. Westphal held a 10-second lead over teammate Anita Coverdale from start to finish. Angie Culbertson of Sullivan Central (TN) was third with a 19:03.

Observers of the boys invitational event had to take a second glance at the winner as twin brothers Brant and Kyle Armentrout of Mount Tabor finished first and second. Brant outdueled his brother by six seconds with a time of 15:26, the fastest time of the day.

"These boys have a great rivalry going," said Mount Tabor coach Guy Spear. "It's nothing but good competition with great results for both of them."

Sophomore Kelly Cook, of Westminster High in Atlanta, defended her title by running a 19:10 to win the girls 3A event just two seconds ahead of teammate Judy McCullough. Jessica Montgomery of Sun Valley came in third.

Eric O'Brien completed the sweep of the 3A events by Westminster runners by winning the boys race with a 15:57. O'Brien won the event as a ninth-grader last year and has won all seven meets his team has entered this season.
