East Mecklenburg runs away with cross-country wins East Mecklenburg won the boys race and tied with Watauga in the girls event at the Mountaineer Cross-Country Invitational Saturday around Bass Lake in Moses Cone Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The East Mecklenburg boys squad squeaked by Sun Valley, last season's N.C. 3A champion, by two points 42 to 44. The Eagles had five runners -- Jason Sheppard, John Hooks, Aaron Roberts, Allen Des Autels and Brad Taylor -- finish in the top 14. Brian Zmijewski of Sun Valley took the individual honors covering the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes 23 seconds. Watauga, last year's state champion, and East Mecklenburg, last season's state runnerup, tied with 74 points in the girls event. Sun Valley finished third with 84 and North Mecklenburg took fourth with 94. Karen Godlock of Polk County was the individual champion with a high school course record of 18:36. Suzanne Black of Sun Valley finished second followed by Amy Clark and Lauren Ballard of North Mecklenburg. |
