Stephanie Alexander West Mecklenburg 21:03.6 Source: The Charlotte Observer -- Sat., November 6, 1993 East Meckleburg's boys captured five of the top six places Friday en route to dominating the Mid-West 4A Regional cross country championship, the Eagles' eighth straight regional title. The Eagles buried their competition with 26 points, followed by runner-up Providence (65). North Mecklenburg, led by Lauren Ballard, won the girls 4A championship, holding off defending champion Providence 51-52. In the boys meet, Providence's Justin Niedzalek took top honors in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16 minutes 15.2 seconds. Finishing second through fifth were the Eagles' John Hooks (16:24.0), Pen Perry (16:24), Joel McSwain (16:39.1) and Ulf Schwall (16:39.1). East Mecklenburg's Thomas Elrod (17.25.2) was 12th. "The guys really try hard," said East Mecklenburg coach Larry McAfee, who is in his 20th season as coach. "We're running well." Next Saturday at McAlpine, the Eagles aim for a fourth straight N.C. boys 4A state championship. "We'd certainly have to be one of the favorites," said McAfee, noting that Southwestern 4A foes Providence and Myers Park should also be contenders. In the girls meet, Ballard (20:06.2) edged South Mecklenburg's Jennifer Lakas (20:14.6) by 8.4 seconds. North Mecklenburg's Natalie Hollar (20:30.9) was third. "I
thought our girls ran an excellent race," North Mecklenburg
coach Rick Jackson said. |
