By Brett Honeycutt, Special Correspondent South Mecklenburg senior Mike Mauriello finally got what he wanted -- a title. This time it was the cross country Mid-West Regional at McAlpine Park on Friday afternoon, where he won in his best time ever, 16 minutes 21 seconds. After finishing in the top seven at last year's regionals and making all-conference for the past three years, Mauriello was still looking for a win in a major race. "It feels so good," Mauriello said. "I feel like I got the monkey off my back ... This just made my whole four years." East Mecklenburg's boys continued their winning ways this year, outdistancing Myers Park 31-53 for the team title. Myers Park won the girls crown by placing five runners in the top eight, with four (seniors Anne Highley and Becca Walker, junior Courney Horn, and freshman Stephanie Bohr) earning all-region honors. "We just had a really strong team this year," Walker said. "This year everyone tried really hard ... it's like a whole different team." Walker and Highley, both captains, have been on teams that missed making the state championships by one place their sophomore year and took second at last year's regionals behind Providence. In the boys' race, Mauriello and Myers Park junior Jim Martin ran together for the first mile and a half, before Mauriello took a slight lead going onto a hill. Coming off the hill, Mauriello had built about a six- second advantage. The race was beginning to look like last week's Southwestern 4A championship, where Mauriello ran with eventual winner Martin for the first two miles, then faded to fifth. This time would be different, as Mauriello looked strong on the hill, and didn't relinquish any ground on the last mile as he did the week before. "I think that's when I felt really confident to pull away from everyone," Mauriello said of the last mile. "At the half mile, I started to hammer it, because I didn't want anyone to catch me." In the girls' race, East Mecklenburg sophomore Kathryn Daniel won in 19:53.5. She outdistanced North Mecklenburg's Rashaun Hill and Myers Park's Courtney Horn, who were locked in a duel for second the entire race. Hill edged Horn at the finish, 20:15.7 to 20:16.0. "I just tried to get out strong at the beginning and keep a good pace," Daniel said. Daniel's consistency this year has netted her one of the preconference titles, the Southwestern 4A conference title and now the regional crown. "She seems to respond well to competition," East coach Larry McAfee said. "She's gotten stronger (this year)." |
