Runners advance to state

CARY -- A number of Triangle high schools were successful at the NCHSAA East and Mideast cross country regionals Saturday at Bond Park.

In the boys Mideast race, Chapel Hill's Kevin Timp won the individual race in 15:39 for 3 miles. Broughton's Ben Sweet placed second in 15:41.

Both runners advanced to the state finals this week at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

"This season has been great," said Sweet, a senior. "The team has been great, and I'm looking forward to doing well next week."

Chapel Hill took first place in the boys team scoring, followed by Northern Durham, Leesville and Lee County. All four teams will advanced to the finals.

In the boys East individual race, Wilmington Hoggard's Quinn Thomas took first place. Cary's Nick Landry and West Barnes made the all-regional team as they placed fourth and sixth, respectively.

Apex will advance to the finals Saturday as it placed first in the boys team scoring. Cary was second and Wake Forest-Rolesville was fourth.

Cary and Wake Forest-Rolesville also advanced to the finals.

Southeast Raleigh dominated the girls Mideast race as Jenna and Jessa Giroux finished 1-2, each with times of 18:21. Both runners move on to Charlotte on Saturday.

Broughton's Anna Hodge, Southeast's Ashley Jackson, Leesville's Caitlin Littlefield and Joanna Mullen and Chapel Hill's Rachel Kitson all made the all-regional team.

Southeast Raleigh won the girls team scoring with Leesville, Chapel Hill and Broughton placing second, third and fourth, respectively.

Renn Watkins of Wake Forest-Rolesville won the East individual race with a time of 18:40.

Allison Perry of Wake Forest-Rolesville and Michele Popple of Apex both made the all-regional team.

Wake Forest-Rolesville led the East girls team scoring, with Cary and Apex coming in third and fourth, respectively.
