CHARLOTTE (AP) -- Ricky Brookshire of Watauga and Casey McGraw of Morganton Freedom set individual state records at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A cross country championships.

Brookshire, a senior, won the 4-A men's title Saturday with a time of 15:05.2, almost 14 seconds faster than Morth Mecklenburg's Stephen Haas. That broke the old 4-A and all-classification record set 10 years ago by Mount Tabor's Brent Armentrout of 15:09.0, also on the McAlpine Greenway course.

Watauga captured its first men's team title since 1996 and defeated two-time defending champion Raleigh Leesville Road.

In 4-A women's competition, sophomore McGraw ran a blistering 18:01.3 for a margin of victory of almost 30 seconds over Julia Lassiter-Lucas of Charlotte Myers Park. McGraw beat the longest-standing cross-country record in the NCHSAA, a time of 18:09.6 run by Kathy Ormsby of Richmond back in 1982.

Southeast Raleigh captured the 4-A women's championship by a 34-point margin over Watauga, with defending champ Raleigh Leesville Road third. Sisters Jessa and Jenna Giroux led the way for Southeast Raleigh, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

Asheville T.C. Roberson took its third consecutive 3-A women's title by just three points over runner-up Franklin, placing three runners in the top 10. Sophomore Alicia Valtin of Western Harnett was the individual champion.

In the 3-A men's competition, Monroe Sun Valley won its second straight crown behind the second straight individual championship for Kevin Crosby. Crosby, a senior, covered the course in 15:50.7, almost 14 seconds ahead of R-S Central's Rocky Bilotta.
