Conference history: * The Rocky River Conference was formed before the 1969-70 school year and ran through the 1992-93 school year before ending. It formed again at the beginning of the 1997-98 school year. * For the 1969-70 school year, the conference started with 10 schools (five 2A schools and five 3A schools). The 2A schools were: Forest Hills, Mount Pleasant, Parkwood, Piedmont and South Stanly. The 3A schools were: Central Cabarrus, Monroe, Northwest Cabarrus, Sun Valley and West Stanly. * For the 1973-74 school year, it had 11 schools (eight 2A and three 3A): The 2A schools were: Charlotte Catholic (new member), Monroe, Mount Pleasant, Parkwood, Piedmont, South Stanly, Sun Valley and West Stanly. The 3A schools were: Forest Hills, Northwest Cabarrus and Central Cabarrus. * For the 1977-78 school year, the conference had only 2A schools: Charlotte Catholic, Monroe, Mount Pleasant, Parkwood, Piedmont, South Stanly and West Stanly. Leaving were: Central Cabarrus Forest Hills, Northwest Cabarrus and Sun Valley (all to the South Piedmont 3A). * For the 1981-82 school year, the conference added: Albemarle, Forest Hills, and North Stanly (all from the South Piedmont 3A), and the conference lost Monroe (to the South Piedmont 3A). * For the 1989-90 school year, Monroe returned (from the South Piedmont 3A) and South Stanly left (for the Central Tar Heel 1A). * For the 1997-98 school year, it started off with six 2A schools: Charlotte Catholic (from the Western Piedmont 2A), Forest Hills, Monroe, and Parkwood (from the Old Hickory 3A), and Mount Pleasant and West Stanly (from the Yadkin Valley 2A). * Parkwood left after the 2000-01 school year (for the South Piedmont 3A conference), and the conference added North Stanly (from the Central Carolina 2A), and West Montgomery (from the Central Tar Heel 2A). * Charlotte Catholic and West Montgomery left after the 2004-05 school year (Charlotte Catholic joined the Queen City 3A/4A and West Montgomery joined the Yadkin Valley 1A), and the Rocky River added Albemarle and South Stanly (from the Yadkin Valley 1A), and Gray Stone Day (a new school from Misenheimer in Stanly County) for the 2005-06 school year to make it the Rocky River 1A/2A conference. * Central Academy (a 1A school from Monroe) joined the Rocky River 1A/2A in for the 2007-08 school year and Union Academy (a 1A school from Monroe) joined for the 2008-09 school year. * Albemarle, Gray Stone Day and South Stanly left the Rocky River 1A/2A after the 2008-09 school year and joined the Yadkin Valley 1A, and Mount Pleasant left at the same time to join the South Piedmont 3A. Joining the Rocky River 1A/2A in the 2009-10 school year were Berry Academy (from the Queen City 3A/ 4A), Cuthbertson (a new 2A school in Waxhaw), and Piedmont (from the South Piedmont 3A). * After the 2010-11 school year, Berry left to join the ME-GA 7 3A/4A conference. * At the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, Mount Pleasant and Parkwood rejoined the Rocky River (and it became, once again, the Rocky River 2A). North Stanly and Union Academy joined the Yadkin Valley Conference, and Cuthbertson and Piedmont joined the Southern Piedmont Conference. * At the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, the conference consisted of Anson County, Central Academy of Technology (Monroe), East Montgomery, Forest Hills, Mount Pleasant, and West Stanly..
