Julie Shea Julie Shea (Cardinal Gibbons HS, Raleigh)
This is a photo of Shea from 1973 at age 14. As
a 14-year-old she ran 4:55 and 10:25.4 for the mile
and 2-mile.

Her state titles in high school included 1975: 880y
(2:14.4), 1976: mile (4:50.8), 1977: 880y (2:16.6) and
a national high school mile record (4:43.1).

As a runner for NC State Shea:
-Earned 11 All American Cross Country and Track titles.
-Won seven National Collegiate Championships.
-Was voted ACC Athlete of the Year in 1980 & 1981. ACC AOYs
(The women's ACC award wasn't established until 1990).

-Was awarded The Broderick Cup; Outstanding
Collegiate Woman Athlete in the United States.

In 1980 she was ranked 3rd in the U.S. in the 3000m
by Track and Field News and won the 5000m
at the Olympic Trials that year in 15:44.12, with
her sister Mary second (16:07.50).

Ran in IAAF World Cross Country Championships:
1978 4th, 1979 8th, 1981 13th.

Shea has been inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame.

As Julie Graw, she was elected to the city
council of Raleigh in 1995, 1997, and 1999.
