1997 4-A State Runners-up: Watauga
Watauga High School maintained its tradition of excellence by placing 2nd to Leesville Road, and 82 points ahead of the third-place team. Three runners from Watauga went under 16:00, and placed 3rd, 4th, and 12th. Watauga's boys teams have won State Championships in 1996 and 1994, placed 2nd in 1995, and 3rd in 1993. The school has produced 3 individual state cross-country champions: Will Hodges (1994), Patrick Phillips (1988), and Mike Clinebell (1985).
