Former Clayton HS athlete
Johnny Dutch of South Carolina had a
tremendous meet at the
SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend.
On Sunday, Johnny finished 2nd in the 400-meter hurdles and 4th in the 110m hurdles, setting personal records in both events. The freshman's time of 48.68 was only .15 behind the winner. More impressively, his time is 2nd in the U.S. this year and 4th in the WORLD. His time also set a new school record at the University of South Carolina. His 13.63 in the 110 hurdles ranks 5th best in school history. He ran 13.36 in high school, but the hurdles in college are 42" high, not 39" like in high school.
Johnny will compete in the NCAA East Regional at Flordia State on May 31st for a berth in the NCAA championships. Later this summer, he will compete at the US Junior Nationals and the US Olympic Trials.

One of this state's track & field legends, Floyd "Chunk" Simmons of Charlotte
passed away earlier this week at the age of 84. Simmons won Olympic bronze
medals in the Decathlon in 1948 (London) and 1952 (Helsinki).
Simmons won NCHSAA championships in the High Hurdles (1941, 1942) competing for Charlotte Central HS. Following high school he served in World War II as a ski trooper with the 10th Mountain Division and was awarded a Purple Heart. He then played football at UNC and starred in track. After winning two Olympic medals Simmons worked as an actor and later a photographer in Charlotte. He competed very successfully in the Senior Olympics during his later years. I personally recall from the 1980s frequently observing Chunk stroll into Myers Park's Stadium as high school practice finished, carrying his shot, discus and javelin and watching this sixty-something guy who looked incredible for his age loosen up and start taking warmup throws.
Veteran Charlotte Observer columnist Ron Green Sr has a story on Simmons. Another Observer story. IMDb entry.

Subject: Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic, New Orleans, LA
The Wakefield High School Track Team will be attending the 16th Annual Allstate SugarBowl Track and Field Classic at historic Tad Gormley Stadium on March 28 - 29, 2008 in New Orleans. The two-day Sugar Bowl Classic is the largest high school track and field invitational in Louisiana and features more than 150 boys and girls teams from Louisiana and surrounding states such as Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Tennessee, and even as far as California. Tad Gormley Stadium is a multipurpose outdoor stadium located in City Park in New Orleans, Louisiana, it has been used for football, track & field, and soccer. It played host to the US Olympic Track & Field Trials for the 1992 Summer Olympics It seats 45,600 and has a 400 meter polyurethane track. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded the stadium, which remained structurally sound. The stadium required major work to the electrical system and the field. As of February 21, 2008, both the inside and outside tracks have been resurfaced, and all facilities have been renovated. The state of the art Beynon Surfaces track will provide the competitors in the 16th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic a great opportunity to turn in their best performances. With support from the Allstate Sugar Bowl committee, as well as long-time Sponsors Brooks Sports and Gill Athletics, the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic promises to be an exciting event.
About the city of New Orleans, it's the most culturally unique city in America, with all its old-world charm and tale-telling mystique; a city known for jazz, Mardi Gras, the French Quarter, Congo Square, and the St. Louis Cathedral, gumbo, beignets, King Cake and much, much more; a truly historic city that has endeared itself to millions of visitors from around the world. New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has been rebuilding ever since thanks to the millions of donations from around the country.
The Wakefield track team will be the "first team ever from North Carolina" to attend the Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic in New Orleans and will be interviewed and observed by the media, fans, and community. This is a unique and maybe once in a life time trip for the kids from Wakefield, and the opportunity to represent Wakefield high school and the state of North Carolina on a national level.
The coaches would like to thank all the parents for their support and sacrifice to make this trip possible.
