East Burke HS senior high jumper, Tanner Anderson has committed to Duke University on a track scholarship for the fall of 2010. He received numerous offers from universities across the country (UNC, Fla, Clemson, WFU, Nebraska, Harvard). Tanner finished the 2009 track season ranked # 5 nationally, and # 2 all-time in NC prep track history behind only Jesse Williams of Raleigh Broughton HS 02' (7' 3"). He jumped 7' 2.50 at the Western 4-A Regionals at AC Reynolds in May. Tanner finished 2nd at the state meet, and was co-MVP of the Western 4A Regionals. He has been 2x Northwestern 4A Conf. champ in the high jump. Tanner carries a 4.7 GPA in honors/humanities courses.

Peter Curtin former ECH scholar athlete dies at
Baltimore Marathon
Peter Curtin was a 2004 graduate of East Chapel Hill and was an All-American goalie for the lacrosse team that won a state championship during his senior year. He was also a member of the ECH cross country team that won state championships in 2002 and 2003.

2007 Clayton High School graduate
Johnny Dutch finished second in the
400M hurdles today at the
USA Track and Field Championships in
Eugene,
Oregon. Johnny's time of 48.18 was a personal best and is the second
fastest in the world this year. Johnny just finished his sophomore
season at the
University of South Carolina where
he was a 3-time
All-American this past year.
By finishing in the top 3 today, he has qualified for the
World Championships to be held in Berlin August 15-23.
In today's race he finished second to 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist and former world champion Bershawn Jackson, and finished just ahead of the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Angelo Taylor.
Dutch won 9 state championships while at Clayton and was named the 2007 Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year for North Carolina.

record at the 34th Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico June 6th.
New Bern set a new National Indoor record (3:13.06) earlier this year, and
will target the outdoor record (3:07.40 by Hawthorne CA in 1985).

Two former North Carolina high school track athletes,
Johnny Dutch and
Booker Nunley both at the
University of South Carolina had big performances this weekend at the
SEC T&F Championships.
Sophmore Johnny Dutch from Clayton High School, placed 1st in the 400h with a #1 Collegiate best time of 48.58 and he placed 4th in the 110 hurdles with a Season Best time of 13.68. Freshman Booker Nunley from Garner High School, placed 2nd in the 110 hurdles with a massive PR of 13.49 giving him the 3rd best Collegiate time in the event.

Former Charlotte Harding HS star Kamorean Hayes, now a soph. at Florida State, won
the Shot Put at the
ACC Indoor Championships with a throw of 52-02 (15.90m) in helping her team to the team title.
UNC sophomore Austin Davis, who competed at Northern Durham HS, won the Triple Jump at 53-05.75 (16.30m).
At the Southern Conference Championships Western Carolina senior Manteo Mitchell (from Crest HS) won the 60 with 6.80, the 200 at 21.57, and the 400 in 49.12.
Western Carolina's Christian Bethune (Harding HS) won the 60mHH in 8.25. Appalachian senior Mark Sturgis (N. Rowan HS) won the TJ at 50-00.5 (15.25m). Appalachian's Julie Ward (a Watauga HS grad) won the Women's Pole Vault with 11-09.75 (3.60m).

Guilford College
Athletic Director, Tom Palombo announces the establishment of the school's first ever men's and women's track program beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. Next year, the
Guilford track program will be immediately eligible to compete for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference(ODAC) Championship and NCAA qualifying in track. Head Cross Country Coach
Heidi Pinkerton and Associate Head Cross Country Coach Bill Cason will assume those duties with the new track team.
A three-time All Southern Conference cross country performer Pinkerton holds five UNC Greensboro track records. Cason brings a wealth of experience and credibility to the track program. He started the track and field program at Division I, UNC Wilmington in 1988 after reestablishing the nationally ranked Clemson University cross country program from 1985-1988. Cason led the Clemson Tigers to the ACC cross country and indoor track titles during the 1987-88 school year. He was named ACC cross country coach of the year following the 1988 X-C season.
The new track program will emphasize middle & long distance events (400m to 10,000m) as an extension of the school's X-C program.
