North Stanly's Jenna Huff is to be presented the 2011 Jack Kelly Fair Play Award at this weekend's 2011 U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Assembly at the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Source:  Press release at USOCpressbox.org

"JACK KELLY FAIR PLAY AWARD, PRESENTED BY BP
The Jack Kelly Fair Play Award was established in 1985 to honor the late U.S. Olympic Committee President John B. (Jack) Kelly Jr. The award is presented to an athlete, coach or official in recognition of an outstanding act of fair play and sportsmanship displayed during the past year.
Notable past recipients: Michele Akers (1999), Lance Armstrong (1998), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1997)"

"Jenna Huff
In the fall of 2010, then high school sophomore Jenna Huff displayed an extraordinary act of sportsmanship during a regional cross-country meet. After trailing Deb Guthmann - a senior from an opposing school - for the majority of the three-mile race, Huff came around the final turn to see Guthmann faltering. It was obvious that Guthmann was in a great deal of pain and, rather than pass her by, Huff grabbed the stranger's arm, helped her get through the last 50 yards and pushed her one step ahead at the finish line."

"The gesture helped Guthmann's Cuthbertson High School team win the race and advance to the state meet. The selfless act had specta\ADtors in tears and resonated throughout the local community, where the story was featured on the front page of the Charlotte Observer's sports section. Huff is now a 17-year-old junior at North Stanly High School in New London, N.C., where she is a five-sport athlete."

Visitors to NCPrepTrack may want to vote in DyeStat's "Performance of the Week" poll. Clayton High's Keni Harrison's 41.41/13.69 double in Saturday's State 4-A championships is on list. The 41.41 is the fastest in the U.S. so far for 2011.

Her 41.41 on a wet track took a huge .59 seconds off the All-Time Best 300H ever run by a North Carolina girl -- the legendary 42.00 NCHSAA All-Classification Record set back in 1986 by Greensboro Dudley's Pam Doggett. That state record lasted 25 years. Harrison, Doggett, and Brenda Taylor (Watauga, 1997) are the only NC hurdlers in history to run under 43 seconds for the 300m Hurdles.

East Burke graduate and Duke freshman Tanner Anderson set a new personal record of 7-4.25 Sunday at the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Princeton University. Anderson is now 5th in the current NCAA rankings.

Earlier this evening I received an email update from the NSSF on the New Balance Indoor Nationals (March 11-13 at The Armory in New York City.)

It contained this item that caught my eye:

"Assistance for Kentucky Athletes: The Kentucky Milesplit website reports that travel grants are available through the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association for any Kentucky high school athlete who chooses to compete at the New Balance Nationals. This is strictly a reimbursement based on the athlete supplying receipts showing their costs of staying overnight, eating, and traveling to the meet. For details please read the article here."

I'm not sure that anything like this has ever been available for NC high school athletes. But it's one of those "What if ...?" questions. The KTCCCA is obviously different from our NCTCCCA, but wouldn't it be nice if some donors pledged funding or fundraisers helped to provide assistance to qualifying student/athletes from our state?

A few months ago I was thinking one of our major "needs" was a quality indoor track facility in NC that would be an alternative to UNC's. (But quality facilities cost in the multi-millions and are really built to be indoor practice facilities/ recruiting-tools for college football programs for inclement weather.)

I'm now thinking this kind of assistance program like Kentucky has is one that we should think about attempting to implement here. (I'm certainly not in any financial situation currently to be able to help out) ... but I encourage others to discuss and consider possibly setting up and finding funding to assist North Carolina kids who could benefit from such help.
