Alumni news:

Keni Harrison (Clayton HS/University of Kentucky) won the 100m Hurdles Sunday (5/9) at the Mt. SAC/USATF Golden Games in Walnut, California. Her time was 12.48 (+2.0), tying her as the 2021 American Leader in the event.

Gabrielle Cunningham (Charlotte Mallard Creek HS/NC State/Nike) was 9th in 13.56. Earlier in the heats, Harrison had a 12.53 (+1.4) and Cunningham 12.85 (+0.9).

Also at the Mt. SAC/USATF Golden Games, Craig Engels (Pfafftown Reagan HS/NC State/Mississippi/Nike Bowerman TC) placed 7th in the 1500 in 3:37.95. Ryan Hill (Hickory HS/NC State University) was 5th (3:45.74) in the 2nd section.

Scott Houston (Northwest Guilford HS/UNC/Indiana/Vaulthouse) was 7th in the Pole Vault 18-0.5 (5.50).

Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons sophomore Shawnti Jackson was 3rd (23.46 +0.4) in the 2nd section of the 200.

Cambrea Sturgis (Kannapolis A.L. Brown HS/NC A&T) was named NCAA Division I Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association).

Sturgis won the 100 (11.03w +3.1), 200 (22.88 +0.9) and led off the 1st-place 4x100 relay at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Greensboro to score 22.5 points, as the Aggies rolled to the crown with 290 points.

At the Southern Conference Championships 5/1-2 in Cullowhee, NC, sophomore Cameron Ponder (W-S Mount Tabor HS/Furman) won the 3000m Steeplechase in 8:49.66.

Khayla Dawson (Charlotte Olympic HS/Indiana) became the College Leader in the Shot Put Saturday with a PR toss of 62-0.5 (18.91) at the Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, IN. Her mark is 6th-best NCAA All-Time and a Big Ten Record.

At the Texas Invitational in Austin Keni Harrison (Clayton HS/University of Kentucky) won the 100m Hurdles in 12.48 (-0.3), becoming the American Leader in the event this year. Harrison also placed 4th in the 100 with a 11.36 (-0.3).

At the USC-UCLA Dual Meet in Westwood, California, Anna Cockrell (Charlotte Providence Day/University of Southern California) won the 400mH in 55.59 and became the College Leader in the event. Cockrell also won the 100mH in 12.79 (+1.5).

Freshman Morgan Smalls (Cary Panther Creek HS/Southern Cal) won the Long Jump with a PR of 21-0.75/6.42m (+0.8). That jump moved her into a fifth-place tie on USC's all-time list. Smalls also placed 2nd in both the High Jump (5-10.75/1.80) and the Triple Jump (42-8/13.00).

Former Charlotte Mallard Creek HS sprinter Cravont Charleston ran a 200m PR of 20.16 (+1.6) at the North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida. The time is 3rd best in NC State History.

Former Charlotte Rocky Road HS jumper Chris Alexander had a PR of 24-3.5 (+1.2) in the Long Jump.

Garner HS alum Randolph Ross Jr, currently a Freshman at NC A&T, was 2nd in the 400 at the North Florida Inv. in 44.69. The time ranks him 4th in the nation.

Last weekend at the Tom Jones Memorial meet in Gainesville, Floriday, Cravont Charleston (Charlotte Mallard Creek HS/NC State) was 2nd in the University division 100-meter dash (10.15 +0.7).

Sophomore Akira Rhodes (Charlotte Mallard Creek HS/NC State) ran a PR 13.13 in the 100mH to place 6th.

It's not unusual to think of this Tom Jones instead of Tom Jones, THE COACH. (NOT the same.) I recall attending a coaches' clinic Coach Jones did in Atlanta, and he was really good!

Elly Henes (Cary Green Hope HS/NC State) was 5th in the 1500 with a PR of 4:15.68 -- the 2nd best time in program history.

Several former North Carolina high school stars had fine performances April 10th at the Miramar Invitational in Florida.

Keni Harrison (Clayton HS/University of Kentucky) won her heat in the 100m Hurdles in a World Leading time of 12.54 (+2.0). She later won the final in a wind-aided 12.38 (+2.7).

Gabrielle Cunningham (Charlotte Mallard Creek HS/NC State/Nike) was 5th in 12.77w. Cunningham earlier had a 12.93 (+3.6) in her heat.

Quanera Hayes (Gray's Creek HS/Livingstone College) was 2nd in the 400 to become the 2nd woman in the world under 50 seconds this year. Hayes' 49.92 was 0.01 behind Shamier Little's World Leading time of 49.91.

Sha'keela Saunders (Fayetteville E.E. Smith HS/University of Kentucky/adidas) was 2nd in the Long Jump, 21-6.75w (6.57) (20-11.25/6.38).

Tim Hall has been promoted to associate head coach of the Kentucky men's and women's track and field teams, head coach Lonnie Greene announced Wednesday.

Hall ran for Charlotte Garinger HS where he was 1988 NCHSAA Indoor Champion in the 1000-yard Run (914.4-meters). That spring he placed 3rd in the 800m (1:55:66) in the NCHSAA 4-A Championships. Hall's coaching stops include Myers Park HS, the Queen City Striders Track Club, UNC-Charlotte, Clemson, Tennessee, and the University of Kentucky.

At the Florida Relays last weekend in Gainesville Anna Cockrell (Charlotte Providence Day/University of Southern California) won the 400mH in 55.65, the fastest time in the world this year. Cockrell also won the 100H in 12.89 (+0.8).

Tamara Clark (High Point Central HS/Alabama) won the 200 in 22.50 (+2.0) to become this year's NCAA outdoor leader. Clark placed 2nd in the 100 with a 11.12 (+2.0), and ran the 2nd leg on Alabama's 4th-place 4x100 (44.39).

The 2021 Indoor season was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as various athletes timing and focusing on the (rescheduled from 2020) 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Nevertheless, Track & Field News has produced their final 2021 US and World Indoor Lists. Here are some former North Carolina high school stars that appear on the 2021 World Indoor List:

Men:

Sophomore Randolph Ross (Garner HS/NC A&T) 2nd in the 400 (44.99 at NCAA Championships) and #8 in the 200 (20.50 at the Tiger Paw Inv.). Ross also ran on NC A&T's winning 4x400 at the NCAA Championships, which was the World Leader (3:03.16).

Vincent Crisp (North Mecklenburg HS/Texas Tech/UArmDistTC) ranked 2nd in the 600 (1:16.47).

Scott Houston (Northwest Guilford HS/UNC/Indiana/Vaulthouse) was tied for #15 in the Pole Vault (18-10.25/5.75).

Scott Houston (Northwest Guilford HS/UNC/Indiana) won the Elite Pole Vault at the 93rd Annual Texas Relays last weekend with a clearance of 18-4.5 (5.60).

North Carolina A&T ran the fastest 4x400 in the World this year, with a 3:00.23. Sophomore Randolph Ross (Garner HS/NC A&T) ran the 2nd leg.

Sophomore Cambrea Sturgis(Kannapolis A.L. Brown HS/NC A&T) won the College/University 200 in 22.87. She also placed 3rd in the 100 in 11.23.

On the first day of the ACC Indoor Championships at Clemson, SC, Kyle Durham (Weddington HS/NC State) improved his own school record in the 800 prelims with a 1:50.46. Durham finished just shy of qualifying for the finals with the seventh-fastest time

In the Women's DMR, Elly Henes (Cary Green Hope HS/NC State) and Anna Vess (Asheville A.C. Reynolds HS/NC State) contributed legs on their 11:07.64 effort, which set a new school record.

On Saturday's final day, Henes earned the 2nd Women's 3000m ACC title of her career, running a blistering 9:00.53 that was a PR, a School Record, a Meet Record, and a facility record.

Chris Alexander (Mint Hill Rocky River HS/NC State) placed 3rd in the Men's Triple Jump with 51'5.75" (15.69m).

Michelle Cobb (Asheville T.C. Roberson HS/NC State) was 3rd in the Women's TJ with 42'10.75" (13.07m).

Joshua Brockman (Charlotte Ardrey Kell HS/NC State) placed 3rd in the 60m Hurdles with a 7.81 PR, 2nd-Best in NC State history.

In the Women's Mile, Anna Vess (Asheville A.C. Reynolds HS/NC State) ran a PR 4:44.22 to place 3rd. Sarah LaTour (Waxhaw Cuthbertson HS/NC State) placed 6th with a PR 4:46.95.

Raleigh Wakefield HS Sophomore Shawnti Jackson was 3rd in the 200 (23.45). The event was won by 35-year-old Allyson Felix (22.59 Indoor PR).

Sophomore Randolph Ross (Garner HS/NC A&T), mentioned below in a Feb. 7th post, ran a personal-best 45.21 to win the 400m on the first day of the Tiger Paw Invitational at the University of Clemson's Rock Norman Track and Field Complex.

His time is tied for the 13th-fastest 400m indoor time by a collegiate competitor in NCAA history. His performance also makes him the No. 1 400m runner in the country.

Brett Honeycutt, Gene Cherry, and David Pickett.

David competed for Asheville T.C. Roberson HS, and then UNC-Asheville. He created WNCPrepTrack.com - which covered the western part of the state. After UNC-A he worked as an Assistant Coach at East Tennessee State University, Milligan College (TN), and North Greenville University (SC).

Elly Henes (Cary Green Hope HS/NC State) won the 3000 Monday, Feb. 1 at the ACC Virginia Beach Challenge. Her time, 9:03.43 is a PR, the current ACC best and 3rd-best nationally.

Henes also placed 2nd in the 5000 with a time of 15:49.96 -- currently #2 in the ACC and #4 nationally.

Gabrielle Cunningham (Charlotte Mallard Creek HS/NC State), competing unattached, won the 60m Hurdles in 8.17.

Randolph Ross (Garner HS/NC A&T) won the 400 (45.79) and also ran on the winning A&T 4x400 (45.87 split) to an NCAA-leading time of 3:04.76 at the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia. Ross also placed 2nd in the 200 (20.64 PR). He now ranks 6th nationally in the 400.

Cameron Ponder (W-S Mount Tabor/Furman) set a track record in the 3000 with a 7:55.15. Ponder's time ranks 9th on the NCAA season top performances list.

Reagan HS graduate Craig Engels ran an indoor 800 PR of 1:46.10 Sunday 1/31 at the ATL II meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas, placing 4th. His 400 splits were 52.68/53.42.
