York Road High School was led to the championship by junior Harding Kirkley, who scored 13.5 points, and was named the meet's outstanding performer. Kirkley won both the high and low hurdles setting new records, ran the second leg on the runner-up 4x220 relay team, anchored the winning mile relay, and led off York Road's record setting medley relay.

J.W. Ligon High School from Raleigh finished just 1/2 point behind York Road. Ligon was leading the final event, the Sprint Medley but placed 4th after a dropped baton. Ligon, coached by George Handy, was led by 5-11, 165-lb senior Charles Copeland, who won the 100 and 220 (running record times in the heats), anchored the winning 4x220, and 3rd-place 4x440. Sophomore Charles Stewart also tied the 100 record in the heats, placed 2nd in the 100 and 220, and led off the winning 4x220.

Ligon's Horace Robinson broke the High Jump record by 4 inches, quite a performance considering the facilities, shoes, and technique of the early-1960s.
