Note: "Rec" indicates a mark known to have been an official (non wind-aided) State Meet Record at the time it was performed. Note: At the 1919 state championships, Friendship Academy dominated, winning 49-27. A close look at the results reveals the name Isley many times. It's because there were five (5) of them: Carl Isley, Garland Isley, Gladstone Isley, Glen Isley and Wallace Isley. Not sure if they were brothers, cousins or what, but what a team!...At the 1917 meet, it refers to the five Isley brothers, but a Guy Isley and R. Isley are mentioned along with Gladstone Isley, W. Isley and C. Isley....A Lafayette Isley from Friendship and a Bynum Isley of Burlington are mentioned in the 1913 meet. Friendship Academy was in Alamance County. Part of the building is now part of Friendship United Methodist Church. (Thanks to Tim Stevens for contributing this, and Brett Honeycutt for the links.)
North Carolina's version of the "The Isley Brothers": There were also 2 other Isleys from Friendship during those years. One was listed as "R. Isley" ...and "F. Isley" won the 880 in 1921. Friendship closed in 1927 with the students going to E.M. Holt High School. EM Holt was torn down in the late 1960s and the students started going to Southern Alamance HS. Note: At the 1926 state championships, "One of the outstanding features of the meet was the presence of Harold Osborne, Olympic broad jump and decathlon champion. Osborne acted as referee of the entire meet, and in the afternoon gave an exhibition of the high jump, pole vault, and hop-step- jump (triple jump as we know it today) for the benefit of the high school visitors in the stands." -- from the Associated Press. Interesting item: One name that shows up more than once the above list is the name Soule. Guy Soule, 1931 & 1932 Long Jump, is Guy Vassar Soule, Sr. who passed away in 2006 at the age of 93. Soule, 1953, 180y Low Hurdles, is Guy Vassar Soule, Jr. son of the the above, who also passed away in 2006 at the age of 71. George Soule, 1964 & '65 100, 1965 220-yard, and 1965 4x220, is the nephew of Guy V. Soule, Sr.
Notes on former schools: Tryon HS and Polk Central merged in 1992 to be Polk County HS. Gray and Grifith merged in 1965 to become Winston-Salem's Parkland High School. Hamlet, Ellerbe, Rockingham & Rohanen merged in 1972 to create Richmond Senior High School. In the early half of the 20th-century the town of Hillsborough was known as "Hillsboro". Western Association: The Western North Carolina Activities Association did not merge into the NCHSAA until 1977. There were about 40 schools that would hold their own championships in each sport. WNCHSAA State Meets. NCHSAC: During the 60s and earlier the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference existed for predominantly black schools.
