Here is a 1972 photo of Bailey running as a Sophomore for Western Carolina University. Bailey won the Mile at the 1972 Florida Relays in 4:03.8. Back in the days when NCHSAA classifications competed together, Bailey won the 1969 State Cross Country Championships and the 2-Mile (9:25.5) at the 1970 State Track Championships. Bailey became the first-ever North Carolina state champion over the 3200m/2-mile distance as 1970 was the first year the distance was included in the state meet. (2 miles is equal to 3218-meters.) His meet record lasted until 1973 when Raleigh Sanderson's Danny Schlesinger ran 9:13.9. As a high school Sophomore, Bailey won the Western Cross Country Sectional in Charlotte and placed 23rd the following week at the State XC Meet in Chapel Hill. He did not appear in the state cross country or track meets his Junior year. |
