1971 State Mile. Ric Shriver.
Shriver throws in a devastatingly hard, fast 3rd lap to leave
the rest of the field far behind. Shriver won in 9:27.0.

Shriver and Mile winner Joe Browder (Grimsley HS)
just weeks earlier spent spring break training together
in Banner Elk and Beech Mountain with Appalachian State
runners Gary Church and George Phillips. Running three
workouts a day the "camp" produced two NCHSAA champions
and two qualifiers for the 1971 National NAIA Track and Field
Championships. (ASU switched to NCAA the following year.)
