5 Records Fall

Reynolds Wins Meet

By Mary Garber, Staff Reporter

Five meet records fell and another was tied yesterday and last night in the All-Forsyth track meet. Reynolds was the team winner with 80 points. Trials were held at Hanes Park and finals at North Forsyth.

East Forsyth was second with 58 1/2 points. Parkland had 56, West Forsyth 34 1/2 and North Forsyth 33.

Eden Morehead and Reidsville were scheduled to compete but withdrew yesterday after Forsyth coaches indicated they wanted the meet to continue as the traditional city-county competition.

Tim Tise of Reynolds broke both the high and low hurdle records in the time trials. He ran the highs in 15.1 seconds, breaking the 15.2 record set by Alfred Adams of Atkins in 1969 and Willis Miller of Atkins in 1970.

Tise won the high hurdles in the finals in 15.5.

The little Reynolds runner ran the low hurdles in 19.8 seconds in the afternoon trials, breaking the meet record of 20 seconds, held by Alfred Adams (1969) and Olin Carter, Atkins (1968).

Tise won the finals in the low hurdles with a slower time at 20.2.

Tise also ran on the winning mile relay team.

Tise was surprised when he broke the low hurdles mark.

"I was the last one out of the blocks," he said.

Tim made his move on the second or third hurdles and came in strong.

In the highs, Tise said, "I was psyched up and felt real good."

Frank Draper of Parkland was also a triple winner.

Draper won the 100-yard dash in :10 and the 220-yard dash in :22.5. His tie in the 220 tied the meet record set by Buddy Bolick of West Forsyth in 1969.

Draper also ran on Parkland's winning 880 relay team, running the anchor leg that broke the race open.

Draper said he doesn't worry about the other runners in the race.

"In the 100, I have to go all out all the way and that's what I did. In the 220, I started fast for about 60-75 yards and then let up a little and went hard the last 25 yards."

Draper pulled ahead near the finish in the 220 to win.

Drew Warne of Reynolds broke the 880-yard run record which has stood since 1960. The blond Reynolds runner passed Randy Whicker on the last curve to win in 1:57.9, breaking the record of 2:01.8 set by Arthur Jacobsen of Reynolds.

The half-mile was the best race of the night. Whicker, who is from East Forsyth, passed Warne at the start of the second lap. But Warne battled back to win.

Both men ran under Jacobsen's record as Whicker had a time of 2:00.

"This record means a lot to me," said Warne. "It has stood a long time. But Randy Whicker pushed me real hard."

Wes Brooks of Reynolds broke the two-mie record with a 9:55.5. The record was 10:08.7 set by Bob Crump of Reynolds in 1971.

"I've been coming down with something today," said Brooks. "And I didn't think I could get the record tonight. But I was real glad I did."

Parkland's 440-yard relay team won in :45.1, breaking the meet record of :45.6 set last year by Atkins.

Henry Fultz of North Forsyth was an easy winner in the pole vault. Fultz vaulted 12 ft. 3 in., which is the best vault in the county this year. It was short of the meet record of 12 ft 7 in. Fultz beat his nearest competitor by over a foot.

Wayne Douthit of Reynolds ran well to win the 440-yard dash in :50.4.

Jim Williams of Reynolds won the mile by a wide margin with 4:31.1.

Bill Lucas of Reynolds had his best throw in the shot put in the afternoon trials with a 46 ft. 9 1/2 in. put. This stood up to win.

Joe Frasco of Parkland won the discus in the afternoon with a throw of 135 ft, 10 1/2 in., best in the city this season.

The top three men in the sprints and hurdles and the top six in the field events will compete in the Forsyth-Guilford meet to be held at North Thursday.

Note that the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board restructured schools for the 1971-72
school year, resulting in Mount Tabor, Atkins, Paisley, Anderson and Carver becoming grade
9-10 feeder schools, with Reynolds, Parkland, North, West, and East becoming grade 11-12
schools. This configuration lasted until 19xx.

Tise Sets Records Before Finals Open

Reynolds' Tim Tise.

By Mary Garber, Staff Reporter

Tim Tise of Reynolds set two meet records yesterday in the All Forsyth track meet before the finals began.

Tise broke the high and low hurdles records in the trials held yesterday afternoon at Hanes Park. He ran the high hurdles in :15.1 and the low hurdles in :19.8.

He won both events in the night finals but his times were not as good. The night meet was at North Forsyth.

There were a couple of false starts in the low hurdle trials and they hurt Tise.

"There were a bunch of little kids standing around at the start." said Tise. "They were yelling 'go' and all that stuff and they messed us up."

"I was the last one out of the blocks. I was about three yards behind at the start. I don't remember how I caught up." Mike Young of East was standing by. Young finished second in the heat.

"I rember," said Young with a grin, "You started moving about the second or third hurdle."

Tise's record in the highs was not even noticed at the time of the trials.

So he did not get the chance to talk about his high hurdle record of :15.1 until after he had won the finals in :15.5.

What was the reason for his slower time at night?

"I don't know," said Tise. "I guess it was because I was fresher this afternoon and I was psyched up."

Tise also ran on the winning Reynolds mile relay team.

Frank Draper of Parkland won three firsts, too.

Draper has been battling all season with close friend Carl Moore of West Forsyth in the sprints (100 and 220-yard dashes).

Draper won the right to be called the city's top sprinter last night by winning both the 100 and 220- yard dashes. He won the 100 in :10 and 220 in :22.5, which tied the meet record.

He also ran the anchor leg on Parkland's winning 880-relay team.

Drew Warne of Reynolds was the only defending champion to keep his title. Warne won the 880-yard run last year and won it again this year in the record breaking time of 1:57.9.

But he had to battle Randy Whicker of East Forsyth to do it.

"Randy made me set the record." said Warne. "He pushed be into it. He really had me scared. I didn't expect him to pull out as he did on the second lap. If he had gotten a little further ahead I wouldn't have been able to catch him."

The other two defending champions were Chris Cofer of Reynolds who finished second behind Charles Robinson of West Forsyth) in the high jump and Carl Moore of West who was second in the 220.

* * *

Wes Brooks of Reynolds won the two-mile in 9:55.5, which was a record.

"I haven't felt well today and I didn't think I could get the record." said Brooks.

Brooks like like a winner all the way. It was announced that he had a crack at the record as he hit the last lap. And he pulled it through.

Parkland's 440 yard relay team of Walt Larry, David McFawn, Wayne Myers and Horace Fulton broke the meet record with a :45.1.

Reynolds was the team champion, scoring 80 points. East Forsyth had 58 1/2, Parkland 56, West Forsyth 34 1/2 and North Forsyth 33.
