Reynolds Captures State Cross-Country Title

5 Demons Finish in First 15 in 100-Plus Field

CHAPEL HILL -- Reynolds astonished a field of 20 teams and more than 100 runners, placing five of its runners in the top 15, to capture the North Carolina State championships in cross country yesterday. The win climaxed an undefeated season in which the Demons defeated 50 opponents and tied only one.

Finishing in order for Reynolds were Bob Huffman (7), Kevin FitzGerald (10, Craig Goodson (11), Tim Plowman (14), Terry Sullivan (15) and Will Warren (26).

Jeff Moody of Pinecrest won the individual championship, running the three-mile course at the University of North Carolina's Finley Golf Course in 15:12.

"It feels fantastic," said Demon Coach Norm Trzaskoma. "We really feel relieved. We knew were capable of running like this. They are a great group of guys. They always give 100 per cent. They're just worked forward for the championship"

"I was concerned," continued Trzaskoma, "that they would not forget what they could do, especially after we tied East Mecklenburg last week." (Reynolds tied East for the Western Sectional title in Charlotte on Oct. 25.)

"It was obvious to everyone in the Central 4-A Conference what we could do," added Trzaskoma. "Now we've shown everybody."

The temperature at the beginning of the race was 83 degrees. Trzaskoma felt this slowed all the times. "It definitely slowed everybody's time a little. The right temperature for a cross country meet is usually around 60 degrees."

Huffman, the first Demon to finish, commented." "I'm new in the area, and this is the first time I've run in two years. But I have improved more under Trzaskoma than any other coach. My main object for running was to get a scholarship in cross country and track."

Sullivan felt the competition was better this season than last year. "It was tougher, but we had a better team. We stuck together this year. It's the best race I've run all year (His time was 16:11). I think the hot weather helped a little, because we practice in it all year."

"It feels great," said Goodson, the winningest member of the team. "It really does something for you. A lot of the credit should go to Trzaskoma. He made us work, and it paid off." Goodson won six meets this season.

Plowman felt the Finley course was outstanding. "It has a little something from all the courses that we've run on this year. It has hills, woods, and open areas. The North Forsyth course was the most difficult that we ran on. It was really tough."

Jon Omdahl, a former cross country coach at Reynolds and at Atlantic Christian College and presently the coach at East Forsyth summed up the meet in one word. "Awesome. When you ge five men in the first 15, you can only call it awesome. The best thing about it is that they can probably come back and defend the title next year."

The Western North Carolina Activities Association did not merge into the NCHSAA until the fall of 1977. There were about 40 schools that would hold their own championships in each sport. The WNCHSAA hosted a cross country championship from 1972-1976.
