Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds won its fifth straight championship, totaling 49 points to
60 for runnerup Chapel Hill.
The 1978 course, run on and around the Keith Hills Golf Course in Buies Creek, was
not particularly well-liked by several runners and coaches, primarily due to runners
having to funnel to cross a narrow golf cart bridge barely 200 meters after the start.
