The 75th annual NCHSAA boys championship was held at NC State University's Paul Derr Track in Raleigh.

All 4 classifications (4A-3A-2A-1A) competed together.

In 1980 NC State's track was still 440 yards. Metric distances were run for all events except for 4x220 yard and 4x440 yard relays.

Northern Durham ran an excellent 41.23 in the 4x100 meter relay. This was the first year the event was run over a metric distance. Their state meet record was unsurpassed for many years.

East Mecklenburg's Carlton Frazier set a 400 record of 47.36, superior (using the conversion) to the old 440-yard record of 48.1 (hand) by James Fields of New Bern in 1976.

Greg Roseboro (Hillside) set an 800 record (1:51.39) superior to the old 880-yard record of 1:53.9 by Tony Waldrop in 1969.

Athens Drive's Than Emery (171-4) repeated as discus champion, missing Mike Rodriguez's state record by just a foot and an inch.

Charlotte Myers Park, led by Ken Dowdle's second-place finishes in the 800 (1:53.02) and 1600 (4:08.4), compiled 44 points to win the team title. The Mustangs, coached by Richard Prince, won the 4x220 (1:26.93) and placed second in the 200 (Ron King, 21.54).

Metric distances were run for the first time at the girls' state meet in Raeford. At the time the NCHSAA made the decision to "retire" existing records, apparently including field events. Winning performances were listed as "records", even when intrinsically superior performances had been recorded by athletes in the 70s (e.g., Julie and Mary Shea, Lynn Lashley). NCPrepTrack.com has attempted in its archives to recognize records not as yard or metric records but by best performance ever for a given event (e.g., considering the 3200 and 2-mile as the same "event").

The 1980 girls meet included a future Olympian, Joan Nesbit (East Mecklenburg) who won the 1600 in 5:05.7. Nesbit competed in the 10,000 meters in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She was a 1982 NCAA All-American in cross country while running for UNC.

Myers Park Takes State Boys' Track

East Meck's Frazier Wins 400 Meters
By Sam Fulwood III, Staff Writer

Raleigh -- Myers Park finished ahead of Northern Durham in the N.C. High School track meet by 7 points and two fewer errors.

Myers Park's Mustangs and Northern Durham's Knights, respective western and eastern regional winners, were cofavorites for the state meet.

When the state meet was over, the Mustangs had 44 points to the Knights' 37.

Durham Hillside and West Rowan were tied for third with 24 points. West Mecklenburg and Richmond County tied with 16 points in fifth place.

Other Mecklenburg County teams finished in this order: North Mecklenburg (14 points), East Mecklenburg (13 points), South Mecklenburg (8), Harding (6), and Independence (4).

The difference between the state champion Mustangs and the runnerups was errors -- the Knights' 800-meter relay team mishandled a passed baton and sprinter Phillip Jones false-started in the 100-meter dash.

Don't misunderstand; the Mustangs' victory wasn't just good luck. Every Mustang participant in the meet outdid his previous best. Myers Park earned the state title on the strength of a first place in the 800-meter relay (1:26.93) and second-place finishes by Ken Dowdle and Ron King.

Dowdle, though he finished second twice, was Myers Park's star. In the 1,600 meters, he passed leader Greg Roseboro of Durham Hillside on the backstretch of the final lap. But the West Rowan's Jeff Hutchinson, who had been third behind Roseboro and Dowdle, raced past the Myers Park junior to win in 4:08.1.

"His sprint really surprised me," said Dowdle. "I thought I had a big enough lead to bring it home without trouble."

In the 800-meter run Dowdle clocked 1:53.02, but was not in the race against Roseboro. Roseboro won in 1:51.4, setting a state record.

East Mecklenburg's Carlton Frazier won Mecklenburg's only individual state title. Frazier finished the 400 in a state record 47.36. It was the second consecutive year Frazier has won the event.

"Coach (Larry McAfee) had told me I was slowing down as I came in. so I concentrated on bringing it in strong," Frazier said.

That was an understatement -- Frazier finished more than a second ahead of South Mecklenburg's Teddy Froneberger.

Herbert Dunn's 47.9 final leg of the 1,600-meter relay paced West Mecklenburg to second place in that event.
