Meet Records: In the Long Jump, West Charlotte's Katrina Grier sailed to a new meet record of 19-11. The previous record was 19-6.5 by Clara Hairston (East Forsyth) in 1981. Grier also set a new Triple Jump record with 38-8.5, breaking the old mark of 37-8 set the previous year by Clara Hairston. Tammy Witherspoon (Charlotte Myers Park) broke her own Discus record set the previous year (114-7) with a throw of 123-5. Bill Will (Gastonia Ashbrook) set a new 3200 record of 9:26.4. The previous record was 9:28.9 by Frankie Nunn (Virginia High) in 1981. Menchville High (VA) established a new record in the Girls Shuttle Hurdle Relay (59.1). The old record (1:03.4) was also set by Menchville, in 1980. The Menchville girls also bettered the 4x100 record, with a 47.7, breaking their own record of 48.2 from 1981. In the High Jump, Pat Poole (East Rowan) tied the meet record with a 5-7. Source: The Charlotte Observer, Sunday - Apr. 18, 1982
Queen City Relays Shortened By Rain By Kate Boylan, Observer
Staff Writer Runners would have to have been surfers to complete the Queen City
Relays high school track meet Saturday at Myers Park. Rain drenched the runners at
3 p.m., and officials evacuated the crowd and participants to the gym. After
almost a full day's activities, athletic director Jim Hartman told everyone to come
back next year. That included athletes from Menchville of Norfolk, Va., and White
Oak of Jacksonville. Menchville spent seven hours in a bus on the way to Charlotte,
and White Oak had embarked at 2 a.m. Menchville, known for its fast relay teams,
did not want to miss the remaining relays: the boys' 800 meters, the boys' and
girls' sprint medley and 1,600 meters. White Oak's girls' relay team wanted another
shot after being disqualified in the morning's 3,200-meter relay. They had not worn
shorts of the same color, but they had since convinced male teammates to lend them
their green shorts. But in the competitions that were completed, many Southwestern
4A athletes stood out. Team scores were dropped from the Queen City Relays in
1980. But if totals were kept, West Charlotte's Katrina Grier and Shelton Boyer
would have earned high rankings by themselves. The Myers Park combo of James
Johnson and Billy Williams would not have done badly either. Competing with some
of the state's top-ranked high jumpers, Boyer won that event by jumping 6-10.
Henry Ingram of High Point Andrews cleared that height also, but on his second try.
They knocked Williams, who was scooting back and forth between the high jump and
the triple jump, and Boyer's teammate, Russell Clark, out of the competition.
Boyer and Ingram agreed to move the bar to 7 feet, trying to better the meet record
of 6-11 set by Charles Mack of North Forsyth last year. Boyer, Williams and Ingram
were first (6-9), second and tied for third in last week's state track and field
honor roll. The quest for 7 feet was ambitious but hindered by outside factors.
A public address announcement that the two were going for the record disrupted
Ingram's concentration, and Boyer spent time escaping a bee. Although Grier
injured a knee in practice Wednesday, she set two meet records. In the long jump,
she flew 19-11 1/2 in her first try, 5 1/2 inches than record-holder Clara Hairston
of East Forsyth did last year. Grier's personal best is 20-1 1/4, which she
jumped at the 1981 state meet. Grier broke Hairston's 1981 triple jump record by
more than a foot, hopping and leaping to 38-8 1/2. Grier can run, too. As soon
as she finished the long jump, she headed over to the 100-meter dash final and came
in third. Southwestern 4A football running backs have carried their battle into
track season. Myers Park's Johnson finished ahead of South Mecklenburg's Steve
Griffin twice. Although they met often in track competition last year, Saturday
was the first time the athletes have met this spring. "I felt I had to get out
of the blocks to beat him," Johnson, a junior, said after winning the 100-meter
dash in 10.5 seconds. With that time, Johnson also beat the race's starter,
Randy Layman, who had held the Myers Park school record for 10 years. "If I had
known you were going to do that, I would have false started you," Layman told
Johnson after the race. Layman said he is happy for Johnson, though, because 10
years is long enough to keep a record. Besides, he said, he really still holds a
record because he ran 100 yards, not meters. His time, unconverted, was 9.7.
Johnson anchored the 400-meter relay team, which came in first; South was second.
Joining Johnson were Williams, John Hill, and Darryl Clark. Griffin, a senior,
anchored South's team. Tammy Witherspoon of Myers Park threw the discus 123-5,
breaking the meet record she set last year at 114-7.
