Meet Records: Tommy Eckard (Hickory) established a new Shot Put record (58-4). The old record was 58-3 by Garinger's Stan Cunningham in 1976. Katrina Swanson (Charlotte Myers Park) bettered the Discus record with a throw of 126-6. The previous record (123-5) was set in 1982 by Myers Park's Tammy Witherspoon. By Kate Boylan, Observer Staff Writer A class act. That's how South Mecklenburg
track coach Jim Seacord described Katrina Swanson's performance Saturday in the
Queen City Relays track and field meet at Myers Park. Seacord's praise was for
an opposing team's athlete. Swanson is a Myers Park senior, and she won three
field events in the meet. Her first victory came in the discus, where her throw
of 126-6 broke the meet record of 123-5 set last year by another Mustang, Tammy
Witherspoon. Swanson's other victories were in the shot put (37-7.5) and high
jump (5-4). Her effort actually was eclipsed by Garinger's Teresa Allen, who was
voted outstanding female athlete by coaches after winning the 100-meter dash (12.1),
long jump (18-4.75) and leading victorious sprint medley and 1,600-meter relay
teams. But Swanson was the meet's only three-event winner. "It was just a good
day," she said. "The high jump -- it felt good." Her fourth event was the sprint
medley relay, but Myers Park failed to place in the race. Swanson's ambitions,
though, lie with the field events. "I'd like to win the state," Swanson said.
"That's probably everyone's goal. I'd like to break the record -- that's my goal."
The state discus record is 132-0. Swanson's best is 129-8. To improve, she said,
"I should lift some weights, but I don't like to lift weights." She is running,
stays in good shape and has a month to work before the state meet. She has another
advantage: "So far, most of the competition has been out-of-state -- except in the
high jump," she said. "There's lots of good high jumpers in North Carolina."
Hickory's Tom Eckard also set a field-event record Saturday. His shot put of 58-4
was 1 inch longer than the record set in 1976 by Garinger's Stan Cunningham.
Darryl Parham of Lynchburg (Va.) Heritage won the discus with a throw of 160-11.
Eckard's silver-medal throw was 154-0. Parham, who finished second to Eckard in the
shot, is a football lineman on his way to North Carolina. Menchville, Va., which
holds nine Queen City records, did not participate this year. But Virginia schools
Blacksburg and Lynchburg Heritage were prevalent when medals were awarded. No team
scores are kept. Richmond County's Kathy Ormsby gave the Carolinas a bright spot,
though, winning the 3,200-meter run in 10:54. Runner-up Celia Gaines of Blacksburg
finished in 11:32.7. But Blacksburg's Darryl Clowes, voted outstanding male
athlete, set a meet record - 9:19.4 - in the boys' 3,200. Gastonia Ashbrook's
Bill Will ran the distance in 9:26.4 last year. Source: The Charlotte Observer, Saturday - Apr. 16, 1983 Queen City Track Meet Today Richard Prince didn't let
Friday's rain dampen his hopes. He and his crew went to work Friday afternoon
when the rain ended, and the fruits of their work will show today in the annual
Queen City Relays at Myers Park High. The meet has drawn 56 teams from the
Carolinas and Virginia, with the competition opening at 9 a.m. in the 300-meter
hurdles and field events. Field-event champions should be decided by 1 p.m.
Expect to see these people among them: Parkwood's John Tillman, 10th-best prep
triple-jumper nationally last year; Myers Park's Katrina Swanson, strong in
discus, shot put and high jump; and Darryl Parham, of Lynchburg (Va.) Heritage,
throws the discus 169-10 and also happens to be headed to North Carolina on a
football scholarship. All Southwestern 4A schools will be represented, but West
Mecklenburg and Olympic have not entered girls' teams. Area coaches say Charles
Holland and John Matthews of South Mecklenburg are likely to fare well in the
sprints; with relay teams from Myers Park and Garinger also expected to contend.
The girls' relay team from Eau Claire, S.C., sprints the 400 meters in 48.8
seconds, among the fastest times in the nation. Other strong teams entered
include Hickory, Gastonia Huss, Greensboro Grimsley and East Forsyth. Menchville,
Va., a power in the Queen City Relays in recent years, has not entered this
season. The 3,200-meer relay will start at 11 a.m., and the other relay finals
begin at 1 p.m. The 1,600-meter relay is the finale, at 4:14. --Kate Boylan
