Note: The Metrolina Relays emphasized boys team performances and depth,
including several non-standard events, in a relatively short, Friday-night
under-the-lights format in late-April for many years during the 1970s and 1980s.
Several Charlotte-area schools chose to participate in another meet (with
standard events) that night in 1984 at West Charlotte HS, the Westside Invitational.
Some Charlotte-area schools you're familiar with didn't exist in 1984 ...
Providence, Vance, Butler, Mallard Creek, Ardrey Kell, Hough, Hopewell,
Rocky River, Berry.

Independence Comeback Decides Metrolina RelaysBy Neil Simmons, Staff WriterAfter completion of the field events in Friday's Metrolina Relays, Independence track coach Jeryl Todd had a good feeling even though his Patriots were trailing South Mecklenburg by 12 points. "We knew we'd be behind," said Todd after Independence rallied to take the title 104-96 over the Sabres in the meet held at East Mecklenburg. "We knew with the depth we had in the sprints we could come back." East Mecklenburg's Tyrone Scott started the meet by breaking a school record and tying the meet record with a 6-8 high jump, leading the Eagles to an event-winning total of 18-4. South Mecklenburg took second. South Mecklenburg won the next three events and appeared to be running away with the title. The Patriots started by winning the shuttle hurdle relay and the 400-meter relay, the latter in 41.6 seconds. Independence didn't let up. They edged South Mecklenburg for second in both the distance medley relay and sprint medley relay, both of which East Mecklenburg won to trail the Sabres 78-76. South enlarged its lead with a 1,600-meter medley relay victory, but Independence was right behind in that event. The key was an Independence 1,600-meter team race victory and a South Mecklenburg fifth place finish. That, combined with an 800-meter relay victory for the Patriots, iced it. East Mecklenburg's Eric Landis, Greg McCollum, Gerald Platt, and Scott blitzed to a record 3:22 in the 1,600 relay, breaking a four-year-old record held by Independence. The Patriots also beat their old record time by finishing in 3:22.3. "I mainly attribute the 1,600 team victory to our distance coach George Phillips and his young runners," said Todd. "We're just now peaking and you couldn't ask for a more perfect time." East Mecklenburg finished third with 80 points, Hickory followed with 44 and A.L. Brown of Kannapolis was fifth with 37 points. Northside, Olympic, Charlotte Country Day and Charlotte Latin rounded out the field. |
