Walton (GA)'s boys took four of the first 7 places to easily win the Boys Championship. Lassiter (GA)'s girls put five in the top 10 (and six in the top 11) in winning the Girls Championship.

Out-of-state runners dominated the championship races. Only two North Carolina boys placed in the top 15, and two girls from NC placed in the top 15.

In the Boys 3-A race the winner (David Honea, Enka 15:37) ran 22 seconds faster than the winner in the Championship race.

The best team battle of the day may have been in the Boys 3-A where Georgia's Westminster School grabbed 3 of the first 8 places, but Sun Valley packed 5 into the top 13 to edge Westminster 44 to 48.

Another good battle occurred in the Girls High School Division, where Westminster was ahead of Statesville up front, but Statesville got five across the line first (5 in the top 20) to edge Westminster 50 to 51.

Interesting notes: Western Guilford's boys placed 4th in the Boys 3-A with a team made up of 5 juniors and 2 freshmen. Woodbridge (VA) took 2nd in the Girls Championship with five finishers -- all sophomores.

Bennett Tops Ireland In Cross-Country Meet

Bill Bennett of Augusta, Ga., outdueled favorite Danny Ireland of Woodbridge, Va., in the men's championship division Saturday, highlighting the Wendy's Cross-Country Invitational held at McAlpine Greenway Park.

Close to 900 runners competed in the event, which included men's and women's high school and championship divisions, the men's 3A championships and an open competition. The invitational was the largest cross-country meet ever held in North Carolina, according to tournament director Richard Prince.

Bennett, who ran for Walton High team from Augusta, won the men's championship race with a strong run through 90 degree temperatures. He finished 13 seconds ahead of Ireland, who competed in the national finals last year, but Bennett admitted that he was constantly looking over his shoulder.

"Danny Ireland was really the best runner," said Bennett. "The heat was getting to me, and I expected him to pass me at any time. But fortunately I held on."

He credited his success to a new confidence that he has discovered in his senior year after fighting to make it on his own team.

"I was looking for it this year. As a sophomore I was 23rd on the team, but I worked my way up to No. 1 last year. Now I have a lot more confidence than before."

Bennett's victory, along with several fine performances by his teammates, led Walton to the team title as it easily underscored Woodbridge and Lassiter.

In the women's championship race, Danielle Adams, of Lassiter won by five seconds over Chapel Hill's Jamie Newnan. Adams was clearly drained by the heat as she ran to the finish line, but she didn't give up the lead.

Her teammates were just as impressive, placing six runners in the top 11 giving Lassiter an overwhelming team victory.

In the 3A championship, David Honea of Enka High ran an incredible time of 15 minutes 37 seconds, beating the meet record by nearly a minute. But his run was only good enough to lead his team to third place behind Sun Valley and Westminister.

Steve Ringsbee of Harding High won the men's high school division with an impressive 12-second victory over Ashbrook's Eric Richman. In the women's high school race, Morehead's Tonya Willis overcame some tough competition to gain the victory.
