Source: The Charlotte Observer - Sunday - April 13, 1986. South Meck's Salmon Stars At Queen City Meet By Joe Posnanski, Special Correspondent. Bill Salmon of South Mecklenburg and Donald Colson of North Mecklenburg had standout performances as more than 50 high schools from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia competed in the 31st annual Queen City Relays Saturday at Myers Park High. Salmon, who won the Stuart Allen Award given to the outstanding male participant, started the day with a bang, overcoming some tough competition to win the two-mile run held early in the morning. Later, in the distance medley relay, Salmon used a strong finish to help lead South Mecklenburg to a come from behind victory. Colson impressively won the 100-meter dash early in the afternoon. It was his third win in three tries this season. Yet he was still surprised with the strong start he had Saturday. The crowd-pleaser of the afternoon was the men's 800-meter relay, where the host Myers Park team ran to a big win. It was the only team victory for the the Mustangs in the meet and the large crowd that assembled loved it. In that race, Chris Outlaw and Willie Henderson combined to give Myers Park an early lead. Then midway through the race, a perfect exchange from Henderson to Bryant Adams helped open up a wide margin. Randy Faust then held off the competition with a 20.9 second anchor leg to seal the victory. The team is undefeated after four races. The Ralph Sandiford award, which goes to the outstanding female participant, was won by Jamie Oxendine of East Mecklenburg after she won the 3,200-meter run. Neese Gray of North Mecklenburg also merited consideration. She won the women's 100-meter dash and the long jump. Greg Clifton of Independence won the men's long jump with a leap of 22 feet 5 3/4 inches. |
