Hillside, East Meck Win In Relays

Durham Hillside and East Mecklenburg dominated the boys and girls divisions respectively Saturday at the Queen City Relays at Myers Park.

Despite gusty winds, the cool weather was good for competition and a couple of meet records fell.

Eric Hichman of Gastonia Ashbrook set a 3,200-meter run record of 9 minutes 12.4 seconds, eclipsing the old mark of 9:19.8 set in 1984. Rock Hill Northwestern set an 800 meter relay record with a 1:27.3 clocking, breaking the old time of 1:27.4 set in 1981.

Hillside, behind Rod Williams, named the outstanding male athlete, won the distance medley relay, shuttle hurdle relay, sprint-medley relay and 1,600-meter relay.

East Mecklenburg's girls won the 3,200-meter relay, finished second in the distance medley relay and third in the shuttle hurdle relay.

East Mecklenburg's Jamie Oxendine, named the outstanding female athlete, won the 3,200-meter run and anchored the victorious relay team [4x800].

Williams may have had the best performance, but Harding's Antonio Walker was the fastest man, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.6 and the 400-meter relay.
