This was the first year that the 3-A and 4-A classifications had separate state track championships.
Two athletes in this meet later became NFL players: Eric Swann (6th, SP) - picked 6th in the '91 NFL draft by Arizona; Jordan set a new state meet record for all classifications of 10.44. He also won the 200 (21.20) and Long Jump (24-1). The 10.44 ranked Jordan 5th nationally for 1987. 3200m winner David Honea of Enka later won $125,000 on ABC's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". Francine Dumas (TC Roberson) won the 800-1600-3200 triple. Sam Harrison (High Point Andrews) won the 100 and 200 and ran on Andrews' winning 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Girls team champion Burlington Cummings, coached by Ralph Holloway, had qualifiers in 10 of the 16 events, and scored in all 10 of them. |
Preview story:
State prep track meet will renew fast rivalrySaturday - May 30, 1987The News and Observer, Raleigh, NC Randy Jordan and Chuckie Simmons will meet again today as the N.C. High School Athletic Association hosts its state track championships in Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina track. All three state meets will be held today. The 4-A schools have their own meet, and the 2-As and 1-As will compete together in one meet. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the running events starting at 1 p.m. One of the highlights of the day should be the showdown between Jordan, a junior at Warren County, and Simmons, a senior at Asheboro, in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Those two sprinters are the state's best and met for the first time last week in the Eastern 3-A Regional. Jordan won a memorable 100 there, stumbling out of the block but finishing in a dazzling time of 10.2 seconds. Simmons was second at 10.3. Jordan also beat Simmons in the 200 and in the long jump. The 100 should be run today at approximately 1:15 and the 200 at roughly 3:55. Durham Hillside, meanwhile is the heavy favorite to win the boys' 4-A meet. The Hornets lost last year's state title to Winston-Salem Glenn by one point. Hillside is paced by Elbert Ellis, a senior hurdler, and by Burnice Cross, a junior who throws the shot and discus. Both Cross and Ellis have a chance of winning two titles today. East Wake should be one of the contenders in the Class 3-A state meet. The talented Warriors won last week's Eastern 3-A Regional and are capable of scoring in many events today.
